Acute Pelvic Pain

Hello, all!

Has anyone else experienced stabbing pelvic pain and muscle spasms in upper legs while on synthroid?

For background, I had my thyroid removed a year ago for cancer and then had radioactive iodine. I’m currently on 150 mcg for synthroid and it’s working fine. But I went to the emergency doctor for stabbing pains and soreness in my pelvic region. I am a woman but am not pregnant and nothing was seen on the ultrasound. My gyno and GI can’t seem to find anything. Has anyone else experienced this?

Ask for vitamin D, folate, B12 and ferritin to be tested

Low vitamin D is extremely common and can cause terrible bone pain

What’s your most recent TSH, FT4 and FT3 results

Definitely get your vitamin D level tested. You should have had vitamin D checked before thyroidectomy as good vitamin D levels can aid recovery from thyroidectomy. Find out whether they were checked and then get the level tested again to find out where they are now. Also find out whether parathyroid glands were lost or damaged. You should be able to determine this from the pathology report. Check your calcium levels and ensure that you have enough calcium in your diet regardless of blood levels. You should eat some calcium rich food with every meal. This becomes even more critical when you approach menopause.

One more thought is to rule out a bladder infection, usually a simple urine test at the doctors. You might be able to drop off a sample at the surgery without actually having to have an appointment unless result is positive.

I had a blood test and urine test and had them test everything. All my vitamin, calcium and thyroid levels are all normal

Calcium blood levels can be normal and you can still be calcium deficient because your parathyroids will activate to rob your bones of calcium to keep blood levels balanced. More likely if vitamin D levels are low. What was your vitamin D level? Normal only says you're in NHS range, it doesn't mean it's a good vitamin D level for someone without a thyroid.

Do you have the actual results and ranges on these?

Vitamin D needs to be higher than just somewhere within range, at least 80nmol, around 100nmol may be better.

When I ovulate , I get stabbing pains in my ovaries / right and/or left side. Extreme pain. Is that what you mean?

I did for a while. I thought I had a UTI, GP thought I had a hernia, then I had a pelvic ultrasound. Nothing found. I had been on levothyroxine for about 5 years at the time. In the end I put it down to a depressive episode and it cleared up after starting Fluoxetine. Who knows!

Might be worth getting your 9am cortisol checked.

Hi

i havent had the pains in the legs but i have had stabbing in the pelvic region and sometimes a stinging sensation. I recently had an ultrasound which showed diddly. I was sure it was ovarian cysts which i had before as it all felt the same as before but nothing showed up...might have come and gone before i had the scan is my theory. It could be that your levothyroxine is not a decent enough dose as thats what happened to me last time. They upped my dose and the cysts didnt come back.....just a thought....

If u get these pains is it all the time, or when your ovulating? Or after sex (😞) perhaps the meds are messing with bodies natural oh? Are you anywhere near menopause? That knocks what u thought was "normal" now "out" are you still in pain? I'd start with a Epsom bath, it won't hurt anything, and might help. Do you take Apple cider vinegar? That helps womens oh "ALOT" along with good yogurt. Which both align for thryoid issues "unnaturally" I got off that med, due to everything pharmaceutical, try easy remedying? Good luck🤞
