Yes - I’ve made it up before out of beef bones and chicken carcasses. It takes ages to make but you get a vat of the stuff.

Some of the branches of Pret A Manger used to sell bone broth but I have not seen it for a while.

Hi Tiredmum75,

First apologies to Siara for hijacking her post... Where can you buy the powder form of bone broth please, and is it free of preservatives and other "nasties"...? Is it as good as freshly made bone broth? Have you used the power bone broth? Thank you.

Made right it takes two days, but is delicious. I've not had any that tastes like homemade. It helped my digestion. Use organic bones. I don't know if organic bones are safe from lead because some cow bone broth contains lead:(

Hi Siara - Indeed! I regularly make it on low in a crock pot. Mostly chicken but at times beef. I follow the hormone protocols from Dr.SaraGottfried. Here is a blog on bone broth by her 😊

Hi Siara, bone broth is easy I buy oxtail couple of large pieces put them in a roasting pan in the oven for 20mins. While they are roasting get a very large hob pan add a few pints of stock add your chopped Vegtables carrot, potato, leak, onion what ever you like and mixed herbs. Then add the oxtails from the oven along with some cyder vinegar I use a good organic one just a glug. I Simmer for about 4 to 5 hrs then take out the oxtail and pull off the meat from the bones put the meat back In the soup pan season to taste. That’s my version it’s lovely, good for everyone regardless of Thyroid problems. You need a day when your home so you can watch it and top up with liquid you will have a big batch some of which I freeze in portions.

Hypogirl60, this sounds like a really good soup, but I'm not sure it's what people mean when they say bone broth. They're usually talking about heating gently for many many hours. The meat will be completely tasteless and slimy by then.

The bone broth recipe I have given came from a nutritionist. To make a clear broth/stock it’s the same recipe the cider vinegar helps leach the goodness out of the bones you just simmer for 24-72 hrs and strain the veg and bones from the liquid.

24 to 72 hours sounds more like what I was expecting!

I think you'd find a pressure cooker (whether standard or "new-fangled" automatic) would take far less time, and cost less to run. Also, for many of us, it might be safer than leaving something simmering not just overnight, but over three nights!

Hillwoman has some experience!

I've never had a pressure cooker, or even looked into one. Maybe I should!

I use Eileen Laird's AIP bone broth recipe in my electric pressure cooker (bought two years ago - doubles as a slow cooker). As Helvella says, it only takes two hours by this method. Results are excellent.

I don’t know about ‘broth’ but this is how I make soup, usually with the chicken carcass and anything that is left over from other meals. Something my mother used to do and probably everyone born before the war.

Yes make bone broth as part of the Autoimmune Protocol and have to say it has made a huge difference in a very short period of time. (Although couldn't put improvements down specifically to the bone broth)

Several Uk suppliers of organic bone broth online too

Just make sure to avoid ones that have iodine added.

Iodine needs avoiding absolutely with Hashimoto's

I love bone broth(esp homemade) I use it a lot when my gut feels off. I have used it after doing a detox. And also in all cooking that requires liquid base.
