Hi
My mind seems to be constantly racing, thoughts flitting from one thing to another.
Always thinking something bad is going to happen.
I wish I could just stop it.
Does anyone else get this and is it a symptom of hypothyroidism?

I get it if I’m over treated. So no, as far as I know it’s not a sign.
Hi lucylocks,
I get that too sometimes & although thyroid function /dosing plays a role so does food!! Check this out Hugs🌺

Many thanks for your reply and link.
Sorry to hear you too get it sometimes.
I think I do suffer with low blood sugar so the link is very interesting.
Maybe my thyroid levels are off so will get it tested.
Best wishes.
Thank you dear! I apologize for my delay... Its not exactly easy nor is it exactly hard to eat healthy foods eh ? I personally was amazed when I first cooked & ate kale. Couldnt stop! 🙃 If one really stops & thinks ... its all the foods of yesteryear we often have forgotten to eat.In my depths of sadness & frustration I always reflected... well, how DID we all get here throughout history? NO JUNK FOOD! Now to crowd put bad & add good. YOU, WE, can & SHALL do it , little by little day by day & get better!☀️😊
Are you taking levothyroxine or NDT for your condition? Yes it's a symptom of hypothyroidism. I did suffer with this on and off whilst on levothyroxine but in the two plus years I've taken NDT all my symptoms have gone and I'm back to how I was before my thyroid started packing up. Possibly your thyroid is still working sometimes so you have an imbalance which leads to racing /high mood or alternatively low mood
Many thanks for your reply.
I take 125mcg. levo. I did try NDT last year but felt the ratio of T3/T4 was not right for me.
I think I may need to add some T3 to my levo. .
It is good you feel well on NDT, do you mind me asking how much you take and which one?
An interesting question for me would be: how many people diagnosed with bipolar illness and placed on some 'heavy-duty' and sometimes harsh psychiatric medications might have thyroid problems at the root of their symptoms. Would it be helpful for patients thought to have a mood disorder to have a COMPLETE thyroid workup; with tests and evaluation by an endo utilizing better standards of care re choice of tests? And working with a psychiatrist BEFORE being placed on just psychiatric medications? Just a thought.
I absolutely agree but I just spoke to my endocrinologist who says the fight to switch from thyroxine to a combination treatment such as natural dessicated thyroid has been going on for twenty plus years and he does not see an end to it. I suggested to him that I believe that the pharmaceutical industry is equivalent to the NRA in the states and all the time they are milking people like me with thyroid problems it's unlikely anything will ever change. He was very quiet and that spoke volumes to me ☹️. I am so scared that one day I will not be able to find a supply of NDT because I can't face returning to mood swings and migraines (which is what I had to contend with for ten years on thyroxine) but he reassured me he would help me to continue with NDT. That unfortunately doesn't do anything for the people unhappy with thyroxine who can't find someone to prescribe an alternative and I have no idea of how to help them. It's a dreadful state of affairs
I might want a second opinion if possible. Two things popped out in your post: 1st-the problem...has been going on for 20 yrs.... That may be true but, to me, that sounds like 'live with it.' Sounds dismissive and a pretty hopeless attitude to me. There are other things to try. And 2nd; his quietness with no response. I believe there is a solution for every problem. Maybe not always easily or quickly found but I would want a doctor who would keep trying. Just my preference and opinion. I want a doctor who believes I can get better and will help me do it. And you're right re your NRA analogy (I'm in the US). Unfortunately it's up to us the patients to get the medical help we need in spite of laws and beaurocracy. I would be interested to know why he had no comment to share after your statement.
I have Graves hyperthyroidsim, RAI in Oct of 2013. My mind raced and I had bad thoughts (even what is called Graves Rage). After radiation I went severely hypo for a couple of years (in the US the drs tend to under medicate Graves patients). During that time that I was hypo I found it hard to focus, so my mind would jump from thought to thought, but I would say it is a different kind of 'mind issue' from hyper. Not sure if I am very clear, lol. Now I am properly medicated, I have no issues with focus, nor am I angry. Quite a lovely place to be. I hope you get it figured out!
Hi, Debra!
You had me at "properly medicated".
Do tell your type and dosage of thyroid replacement, if you please.
I am so sorry, I never saw this. It has been three years, how are you doing? My doctor in Taiwan said it should be dosed according to weight. My doctor in the usa had me taking 50 mg, I was literally gaining 4 lbs per month. I went from 130 to 180 lbs, no end in sight. My hair was falling out, skin and nails were horrible, my face puffy and swollen. I get angry just thinking about it. He REFUSED to raise the dose. When I moved to Taiwan, my doctor immediately put me on 150 mg, and tested all my vitamin levels. He put me on vitamin d and b, also iron, and selenium. In a year I lost 40 lbs without trying. The rest of the fat is stuck like glue. So I still do not forgive my usa doctor, I feel I suffered needlessly. Hope you are doing better, so sorry I just saw this!
Many thanks for you reply.
Sorry to hear you have had it also.
It is good to hear you now feel well after having such a hard time.
Best wishes.
