Hi Gareth. I haven't found any links to cancer when I've Googled Vitamin D deficiency. Try: "NHS Choices - symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency ".

If you have been given Loading dose of Vitamin D (300,000 IU to be taken at 50,000 IU each week for 6 weeks) that sounds familiar. You will then go on to a daily maintenance dose. You can check this out by Googling "treatment of Vitamin D deficiency ".

If you read through posts on here, you'll find others on similar treatment for Vitamin D deficiency.

Hope this helps.

It's really a good thing that you have found out you have Vitamin D deficiency. And it seems that your GP has started you on the correct treatment. I didn't need the Loading dose because my Vitamin D level wasn't as low as yours. I'm on the daily maintenance dose.

Vitamin D is essential for the correct absorption of Calcium. Without adequate Vitamin D - Calcium can go to the wrong places such as tissue & blood vessels instead of to bone , where it should go.

Did you have any other nutrients levels tested? Such as Vitamin B12, Folate, Calcium or Ferritin? If not, you could ask your GP to tests for these also.

Did you get your Thyroid meds sorted? Did you get the Thyroid Antibodies blood tests?

If that is 26 nmol/L then the Vit D Council recommends a level of 100-150nmol/L. Once you've reached that level you will need a maintenance dose for life which your GP may not prescribe so you may need to do private testing and buy your own supplement at that time. You can do this with a private fingerprick blood spot test with City Assays vitamindtest.org.uk/

Your doctor wont know, because they are not taught nutrition, but there are important cofactors needed when taking D3

vitamindcouncil.org/about-v...

D3 aids absorption of calcium from food and K2-MK7 directs the calcium to bones and teeth where it is needed and away from arteries and soft tissues where it can be deposited and cause problems.

D3 and K2 are fat soluble so should be taken with the fattiest meal of the day, D3 four hours away from thyroid meds.

Magnesium helps D3 to work and comes in different forms, check to see which would suit you best and as it's calming it's best taken in the evening, four hours away from thyroid meds

naturalnews.com/046401_magn...

Check out the other cofactors too.

Hi, I am also regularly vitamin D deficient... without regular supplements I dip right down so am now on a daily dose of 800iu, after having had the huge loading dose for 12 weeks to start with.

There is no apparent reason for my deficiency, with the rest of my blood levels being normal, but my GP said it's a common problem in this country now, particularly north of Birmingham! Which I am not lol. Hope this makes you feel a little more at ease. I was diagnosed with the deficiency after getting very achey bones. xx

My level was 26 not sure if that's good or bad .. Never happened before ... thankyou 😊

It's not good. It's deficient, which is why you've been prescribed the Loading dose to take for the first 6 weeks. This should bring your level up to a good level. You and your doctor should then decide the best maintenance dose for you which is usually 800 IU but can be up to 1000 or 2000 IU, depending on the individual patient's medical conditions & need.

Hope you feel better soon.

Mine was 22 the first time they found my deficiency, then up to 61. Wasn't given a maintenance dose and ended up deficient again, 24 this time... now after three months loading dose it's up to 85 :) and I have to take 800iu daily, forever.

I was put on 40,000 a day for 10 weeks & now 800 daily. My level was 19 & was told it was extremely deficient.

Mine was 9 about 14 years ago! Wow! I was on high loading doses which did not raise mine very much. My body respinds better to cod liver oil or Nordic Naturals Vit D3. I know Vit D is best absorbed with your highest FAT meal!!!!!

I take 2,000-5,000 daily and am finally around 35🙌🏻🙌🏻 Wahoooo! I have a long way to go!

Dr. Coimbra maintains that we should all take 10,000iu per day of Vit D. There seems to be some divergence on what a ‘loading’ dose is and also a lot of fuss about Vit D toxicity. Dr. Coimbra treats with 100,000iu - 500,000iu per day but restricts all calcium and measures PTH levels regularly. This dosage is not recommended without supervision by one of Dr. Coimbra’s trained people and is used for treating autoimmune diseases.

Hi Gareth,

I have costochondritis too. Vitamin d deficiency doesn't help! I was 11 nmol, and now I am at 108 nmol with supplementation. As liisa says it's very common in this country.

Don't worry, you'll be fine.

Best wishes

Caroline
