Polyuria (where the body urinates more than usual) is listed in the overdose section of the information for health professionals on the medicines.org website here:

medicines.org.uk/emc/produc...

4.9 Overdose

The most serious consequence of acute or chronic overdose is hypercalcaemia due to vitamin D toxicity. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, polyuria, anorexia, weakness, apathy, thirst and constipation. Chronic overdoses can lead to vascular and organ calcification as a result of hypercalcaemia. Treatment should consist of stopping all intake of vitamin D and rehydration.

It's very unlikely that you are overdosing on 1,600iu daily but you just may be reacting to that particular product, maybe not surprising when you see the list of excipients, they may not suit everyone:

6.1 List of excipients

Capsule content

Maize Oil, refined

Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) (E321)

Capsule shell

Glycerol (E422)

Purified Water

Brilliant Blue W.S (E133)

Gelatin (E441)

I would discuss this with your GP, maybe change to a purer product. If you want to buy your own then Doctor's Best D3 softgels contain just D3 and extra virgin olive oil, nothing else at all.

If you haven't already done so you should check your calcium level before taking anymore VitD, it's just possible your calcium is to high and causing the problem.

yes i will although I only started having this problem when i started these tablets but i will mention it to the doctor

How does one know if calcium high? And whee do you get it tested? (apart fomr gp!)

Medichecks do a calcium test but it has to be done at their London clinic as it's not suitable for posting, GP is the simplest way to get a test. If you had hypercalcemia you may have symptoms but not always.

Don't think I stand a hope with gp. Do you know what the symptoms are? I will (as usual) google but perhaps you have more knowledge Thanks

I had hypercalcemia due to a parathyroid adenoma, it's complicated so better you google and read at your own pace.As your VitD is at a good level I wouldn't worry about it.

I entirely agree about vit. d it was gp who said some of my "dodgy " liver bloods MIGHT be due to low vit d She was surprised to find that I had good result esp. as I had not at that point been taking supps. however she was quite insistant that taking vit. d for 8 weeks ok and then to get re- tested (liver ) after 3 months I just can't stand the constant weeing day and night that the vit. d causes. I'm going to stop for a bit and see what happens...wish me luck. I'm going to google your condition . Hope you ok now x

Thank you for this very interesting post, I have been started on same vit d and having the weeing problem ..I already have OAB so i think I should have at least been "Warned" about the prob!. Will miss a few doses to see if it helps may be change to the brand suggested by Seaside Susie ?

Ooh let me know how you get on … what is oab

foxglove profile image
foxglove in reply toninja1

OAB...overactive bladder...my gp knows about this so one would think would be careful about prescribing me vit. d Also had private test for vit d and was 93.5 towards the top of the adequate range so probably didn't need I am halfway through the course so maybe best to finish then "argue" with doc!

Mine is 40

Enough said! Possibly yours could be a bit higher but is it worth putting up with the constant weeing? My vit d in the past has been as low as 26 and I suffered no ill effects! It has just got gradually higher without (until now) taking a supplement and from what I can gather Fultium is one of the worst offenders, hence that is why I am annoyed at doc prescribing It was a phone appt with a gp I don't know and who deffinitely doesn't know me If you're fair skinned got to be careful esp. if calcium rises . Oh dear - bit of a gamble and I hope your doc is a bit more clued upthan the lady I spoke with (Ha-Ha)

I’m very fair I have red hair and I’m nearly 70 so elderly as well I’m going to stop them I can’t go weeing all night long I’m worn out. Going to have blood test to rule out diabetes

You're a spring chicken not elderly. I'm 82 and for a while I've been in the predibetic range, just. but this years tests had normal HbA1c reading (don't know why) Sometimes things just sort themselves I too am stopping the vit D for s a bit, I'm up and down every hour and worn out

I’m prediabetic as well but not had it checkedfor two years with covid just can’t get to see doc. I’ve ordered the test from Medichecks
