Finally have been given a date to see a consultant. Diagnosed hyperthyroidism October 17 and taking Carbimazole & propanol. This will be my first visit and have been told that the consultant has looked at my recent thyroid function test and I was told by GP surgery, results “ok” and today by the booking centre that consultant has said they are “slighter better” and wants GP surgery to do an iron level test.
What’s the purpose of this?
I do have regular B12 injections and my absorption level of it was fine.

If I were you I would wait until you speak to the consultant. If there is anything worrying you or you have any questions write them down before you go. Consultants generally know more than the GP. Try not to worry too much, not easy I know, but nothing is changed by worrying and you need to save your energy. There is a good chance they will offer you Radio Iodine therapy and you would need to have a real think about what the best option is for you before you go to see the Consultant. I refused it because I live in hope there may be some progress made and they can 'fix' my thyroid, which may be silly but I feel I want to hang on as long as I can. I am on the same meds as you but not B12. I have found that by playing around with the Carbimazole dose I can cope pretty well normally. My consultant knows I have been doing this and as my thyroid hormone level is in the normal region he has no problem with that. I do find I have to listen to my body. I know that if I under pressure I need more Carbimazole and if life is quiet less. I get a slight prickling sensation in my neck if I need more meds. I hope all goes well with your appointment x
I am unsure about the RAI treatment the more I read about it but don’t know if I can just hang in there with just the carbimazole. I am hoping a dose increase might help so something I am going to ask. I hate the pain from swillowing and the feeling I have that an alien is growing inside my throat. I have a 101 questions to ask the consultant, it has taken so long to see one. I had my iron levels checked a month ago and my absorbition levels were fine. I did ask the GP when I got diagnosed was there a link between my B12 injections and my thyroid condition?
In the UK, although endos may mention RAI quite early on, they don’t usually seriously consider it as an option until the Carbimazole has been given a chance to work, which usually takes 12-18 months, so I would try not to worry about it for the time being.
The thyroid has a complex effect on the body, and Carbimazole can also have wide-ranging side effects, so it isn’t unusual to have additional tests ordered - and quite often, they are just a precautionary check.
Do you have your latest blood test results, and the associated ranges (usually in brackets after the results), and how much Carbimazole are you currently taking ? Your GP surgery should give you your blood test results on request.
As Ruane says, listen to your body, get plenty of rest and try not to get over-stressed - given that anxiety is one of our symptoms, and being hyper tends to make us behave like Duracell bunnies (go like mad until you flop!), I realise that is easier said than done !
Definitely write down the questions you have to ask (others have had different experiences, but I’ve never felt rushed at en endo appointment), and don’t be afraid to take a pen and notepad, and make notes of what you are told.
