HELP?!?!I'm new

Hello,

I recently recieved a phonecall to come into the doctors following my blood test results saying that its something to do with my thyroid.

When arrived the doctor apologised saying there were no need for me to come in as my TSH levels were 4.7 and that i should repeat my blood tests in 3 months.

Should i be worried about this? Is it normal?

I do feel rubbish in my self, for example always tired and napping in the day sort of thing.

Thank you,

Heather Mason

First thing is, do you have any actual blood test results? if not will need to get hold of copies

UK GP practices are supposed to offer online access for blood test results. Ring and ask if this is available and apply to do so if possible, if it is you may need enhanced access to see blood results.

In reality many GP surgeries do not have blood test results online yet

Alternatively ring receptionist and request printed copies of results. Allow couple of days and then go and pick up. They can make nominal charge for printing but many will do so for free (£10 max)

For full Thyroid evaluation tests needed are TSH, FT4, TT4, FT3 plus TPO and TG thyroid antibodies. Plus vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12.

Essential to test thyroid antibodies plus vitamins

Private tests are available

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have money off offers.

All thyroid tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting. This gives highest TSH and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, GP will be unaware)

If antibodies are high this is Hashimoto's, (also known by medics here in UK more commonly as autoimmune thyroid disease).

About 90% of all primary hypothyroidism in Uk is due to Hashimoto's

TSH 0.47

ft4 0.50

FT3 16.3 3

I didn't really understand my doctor at all..

All he said was it wasn't worrying but to repeat the test in 3 months as it was boarderline

he said it was overactive? but isn't my TSH level underactive?

Just very confused he wasn't clear

Thank you

I think you need to get printed copy of results including ranges

You are legally entitled to printed copies of your blood test results

These certainly don't make much sense as they are, without ranges

An overactive thyroid result should probably be retested sooner than 3 months

Request that thyroid antibodies are tested too

Ideally TPO and TG antibodies

Hashimoto's and Graves can sometimes initially present with similar results and symptoms

Welcome to the forum, HealthyXx.

Is TSH 0.47 or 4.7?

Do you have the lab ref ranges for FT4 and FT3 (the figures in brackets after the results)?

HealthyXx,

Perhaps you could ask the receptionist to print you off a copy of your results and ranges and post them in a new question for advice.
