Kefir Diary Update; attempting unpasteurised cow dairy Kefir... results.

Having done so well since late last October on coconut water Kefir, experiencing so may benefits, I thought I would attempt to transition to dairy kefir... I had read on the internet that is was possible to tolerate unpasteurised cow dairy, so I thought I'd try it.

Well, it has not done me any good.

I have reacted badly.

I have been swollen, have seriously aching joints, general pain throughout my flesh, bad headaches, crippling back pain, dreadfully painful toe joints making walking so very painful...

Not good at all.

Very disappointed. In need of purging myself of this nasty allergic response. Very fed up, but thought it best to warn others than it may not necessarily work for you, even if you use unpasteurised milk.

I was so hopeful...

Ah well, "Rome was not built in a day".

Poppy a not very happy 🐈!

Oh dear.

I haven't tried making milk kefir. I'm sticking with the water one for the mo.

Have you ever tried A2 milk? I'm afraid I cannot offer any anecdotes but it's meant to be an alternative to people who are intolerant to A1 beta-casein protein which is found in "regular" milk. It's only certain types of cow that produce A2. My local Tesco and Waitrose stock it but I've never tried.

Thank-you for the thoughts and advice.

I want to make the milk kefir to increase and vary my gut Biome. Our lovely coconut water kefir has about up to 15 strains of beneficial bacteria max...the dairy version has up to 50. Hence my attempt.

Having read that unpasteurised cow dairy is feasible for folk who are cow dairy intolerant, I was willing to try.

It obviously has not been so for me...

So, I have tried to wash the grains to get rid of the cow dairy, but I fear it will not work...as I have tried to make the kefir from goat's milk....However, I feel that I have reacted so badly at the moment, that even the goat kefir version will give me a reaction..

Ah well I am seeing the Nutritionist tomorrow so I shall ask her.

However, just to say I can eat French goat's cheese no problem. I can tolerate French, Spanish and Italian semi skimmed cow dairy, but not British cow dairy! So I am even wondering if I can tolerate the French goat's cheese...but not British Goats milk!!!???? Oh dear, it's such a minefield. It's miserable.

Thank you anyway.

I can hardly breathe as the room for my diaphragm to rise and fall is so, so restricted! My lung specialist said the next time this happened I was to go straight to hospital to have a blood test on the spot, but realistically can you see some conceited little, worn out Dr in A&E take me seriously! Besides I can't cope with even the idea of spending the night in a corridor in A&E waiting to be believed!

I am seeing the Nutritionist tomorrow, so I have to hang on for that!

I do so live our Coconut Kefir, just wish it had more strains of bacteria... Will have to go for the fermented veggies.. we shall see said the blind man😎... Ha ha..

Hang on in there - and let's hope the nutritionist can help you work out the next steps. All the best.

Poppy...do be careful :( If your breathing gets so bad you must ring 111 or whatever to see if you need an ambulance. Can't mess about with breathing difficulties and going hypoxic :o

You sound like me in regards to hospitals and A&E!

Bless you.. there must be a universal allergy factor for us and hospitals! No it's not as bad as my lamb reaction that was scary as O started to feel my airways becoming restricted. This is just the swelling to my abdomen not allowing room for my diaphragm to go down for proper breath, so I am breathing shallowly...it will pass, sadly I've been here before.

But thank you anyway for thoughts.

it appears that kefir grains break down milk proteins into peptides milkgenomics.org/article/ke... but I don't know what the difference between cow, goat and sheep. It could just be that you are very sensitive to change in the gut bacteria or that you are sensitive to one or two peptides (and it's pretty much impossible to find which). Kefir is the only animal product I eat, but I've never had a bad reaction so can't be very helpful. Could be a bad bacteria die off, perhaps. If I use cow milk (which is rare) I use raw Jersey milk from a farm nearby.
