Has anyone tried the AIP diet? I have 2 autoimmune conditions (Hashis and Coeliac) and keep reading this and thinking is it time to give up nearly everything?!

I have had good experiences. I moved through FODMAP and combined that with Dr Myhills Stone Age/paleo but the dietary advice of Sarah Ballantyne and using the Autoimmune protocol of Angie Alt and Mickey Trescott has helped a lot. I have better settled symptoms and like the idea that reintroductions are in four groups, so although reintroduction can be a lengthy process at least you can do it just once and know for certain what helps or hinders. But there is no cheating on this program so you need to be committed.

Hi Jules, I too have Coeliac disease and Hashis. Diagnosed with Coeliac when I was small (I'm 62 now) so have been gluten free for years. Diagnosed Hypothyroid about 9 years ago, was on Levo for many years when it eventually dawned on me that I didn't really feel any better. Eventually found a doctor who prescribed NDT (Erfa) and switched in October 2016. Had a very rocky journey switching for various reasons, but now settled pretty much. Though taking many supplements daily to help adrenals.

After a visit to different doctor last year, he advised trying AIP. I had already looked into it previously, but thought I might try and give it a go. But thought I would do it on a gradual basis, rather than a whole hog basis. I cut out a couple of things for a couple of weeks or so, but didn't really notice much difference, certainly nothing startling, so I decided to give it up.

When you have Coeliac disease, you already have a number of restrictions of course (I can't eat oats either, not even the gluten free ones) I already leave out anything soy / soya which isn't good for thyroid, also almonds and peanuts. From a personal perspective I also gave up alcohol completely about 9 years ago (did a dry January, then thought I'd see if I could do a year, at the end of a successful booze free year, it seemed daft to go back to it!) and gave up smoking when I was 25. I also don't eat anything with refined sugar in, nothing with artificial sweeteners in either. Since last summer I've also been loosely following the Blood Sugar diet (not the 8 weeks 800 cals per day part) and have lost 2.5 stone in weight, so roughly low carb (not cutting carbs out) and raised fat intake.

So considering all those things, AIP was too much for me. I did try some bone broth from an organic farm online and it was very nice but worked out about £6 for a mugful. So gave that up too. I'm sure you can make some quite easily, but I haven't worked out how to find the time to do that yet.
