Either low folate and or low b12. Or can be autoimmune hemolytic anemia or spherocytosis.

Its difficult to use a single measure in isolation. All it means is that your red blood cells have a higher amount of haemoglobin in them than is normal. It is a ratio between MCV (the volume) and MCH (haemoglobin content). It is probably an indicator that you have an problem absorbing vitamins and minerals in your gut.

What were the other test results.

Ferritin 12 (30 - 400)

Folate 2.1 (2.5 - 19.5)

Vitamin B12 229 (190 - 900)

MCV 80.3 (80 - 98)

MCH 28.1 (28 - 32)

Haemoglobin 119 (115 - 150)

Haematocrit 0.44 (0.37 - 0.47)

Platelets 250 (140 - 400)

looks like you have a microcytic anaemia -low iron - red blood cells on the small size.

You are also folate deficient

This suggests an absorption problem.

Likely that you are/will become B12 deficient.

More information/support on getting B12 deficiency diagnosed on the PAS forum

Mchc is a calculated number, dividing haemoglobin by the haemocrit. My sons is always above range and has been under the care of a haematologist. Another test with mchc is the reticulocyte count and if that is raised it indicates the blood cells are breaking down too quickly and body is trying to replace quickly. I would see first if you are actually anemic and also get your b12 and folate checked and then take from there.

Think you need to discuss with your doctor looks like you are below range on your folate and very low end for b12. As well as your ferritin. They should be advising you to supplement with ferritinx folate and b12. Bet you are feeling awful. X

I know this post is 2 years old but just interested if you got to the bottom of the high MCHC? My blood test are also similar (354).

I’ve google hemolytic anaemia and I wish I hadn’t now. My b12 and folates are also bottom end of the range as is my iron.
