deelcee how do you know T3 is right for you? What are your symptoms, have you been diagnosed, are you taking any thyroid meds etc etc?
i was diagnosed with hashimotos 20years ago!
currently on t4 and feeling crap, like everyone else i cannot get t3 on the nhs
deelcee have you previously been prescribed T3? Do you have any recent test results including those for vitamins and minerals? Have you been under an Endocrinologist?
Welcome to the forum
Members will be more enclined to pm you if you can show you are ready for T3
First have you had vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 tested and supplementing if too low
Post results and ranges if you have them.
If not been tested, they really need testing FIRST
Low vitamin levels stop both T4 and T3 working
All thyroid tests should be done as early as possible in morning and fasting and don't take Levo in the 24 hours prior to test, delay and take straight after. This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results
Is this how you get your tests ?
Also do you know if you have Hashimoto's also called autoimmune thyroid disease diagnosed by high thyroid antibodies
If you do, then many find it necessary to be strictly gluten free
Poor gut function can lead leaky gut (literally holes in gut wall) this can cause food intolerances. Most common by far is gluten
According to Izabella Wentz the Thyroid Pharmacist approx 5% with Hashimoto's are coeliac, but over 80% find gluten free diet helps significantly. Either due to direct gluten intolerance (no test available) or due to leaky gut and gluten causing molecular mimicry (see Amy Myers link)
But don't be surprised that GP or endo never mention gut, gluten or low vitamins. Hashimoto's is very poorly understood
Changing to a strictly gluten free diet may help reduce symptoms, help gut heal and slowly lower TPO antibodies

Deelcee,
If you post your recent TSH, FT4 and FT3 results members will advise whether you are optimally dosed on Levothyroxine or whether dose needs adjusting if you add T3.
i have been prescribed liothyronine in the past by the endo at derby royal infirmary back in 1997 and took it alongside t4 but when i moved to a new surgery in 2006 it was stopped and only subscribed t4 my current dose is 175mcgs.
the last test i had was on 31.10.17
serum sodium 139 mmo/l
serum potassium 4.9
serum urea level 6
serum creatinine 92
free t4 11.6
tsh 9.1
they refuse to do a free t3 test...
the last free t3 test was done in 2013 when it was 3.5 pmol/l
i am currently taking aviticol capsules for vit d deficiency 2x1000iu per day
i have not been tested for ferritin, folate or b12
i hope this helps
Deelcee,
You are very undermedicated to have TSH 9.1 while taking 175mcg Levothyroxine. I suspect T4 is low but can't be certain without the lab ref range (the figures in brackets after results).
The goal of Levothyroxine is to restore the patient to euthyroid status. For most patients that will be when TSH is 0.3 - 1.0 with FT4 in the upper range. FT4 needs to be in the upper range in order that sufficient T3 is converted. Read Treatment Options in thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/about_... Email dionne.fulcher@thyroiduk.org if you would like a copy of the Pulse article to show your GP.
Few GP practices check FT3 so if you are going to selfmedicate T3 you will need to order your own FT3 test to check FT3 remains within range. thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin... Medichecks offer #ThyroidThursday discounts.
sorry ft4 range = 10.00 - 19.80 pmol/l
You could get FT4 and FT3 tested along with thyroid antibodies via Medichecks or Blue Horizon

If your TSH is 9 you are very under medicated
Ask GP for 25mcg dose increase and retesting in 6-8 weeks
Also ask them to test folate, ferritin, B12 and vitamin D
