Worries about my 6 daughter - early stages of Hashimoto’s

Hello everyone

I’m concerned about my daughter. She has some potential signs of Hashimotos which is what I have (diagnosed aged 30). I think I started to develop problems at an early age myself, had precocious puberty then started feeling unwell from around age 15. She is tired and anxious, easily tearful a lot, gets cold hands and feet a lot, gets cold easily and has mild ibs symptoms occasionally. I don’t know how to approach my worries with my doc. They are reluctant to test anything but tsh. Anyone had any experiences like mine? Can kids do private blood tests? Am I just being a bit paranoid?!

Auntbessy,

You can order a private thyroid test for your daughter to do at home. Blue Horizon Thyroid Plus 11 or Medichecks UltraVit tests include TSH, FT4, FT3, thyroid peroxidase and thyroglobulin antibodies, ferritin, vitamin D, B12 and folate. thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin... Medichecks offer #Thyroid Thursday discounts.

Are they ok about testing children tho? Are there different ranges for kids?

Auntbessy,

As far as I'm aware the Blue Horizon and Medichecks use one range. They won't know she is <16 if you don't tell them. There are supposedly paediatric ranges but I don't see them posted on the forum when members post their children's results.

You can phone and ask and details will be in the above link. Both labs are helpful and make sure she is well hydrated a couple of days before and hands warm on morning of blood drawn. They are pin-prick home tests but I think they can also arrange for blood to be drawn and if you speak to them they will advise what is best for a child

Blood draw has to be at the very earliest, fasting (she can drink water) and if she was taking thyroid hormone replacement she'd allow a gap of 24 hours from last dose and test and take afterwards.

GP should also test B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate.

For full evaluation you ideally need TSH, FT4, FT3, TT4, TPO and TG antibodies, plus vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 tested

Low vitamin levels are extremely common.

See if you can get full thyroid and vitamin testing from GP. Unlikely to get FT3

Private tests are available

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have money off offers.

All thyroid tests should be done as early as possible in morning and fasting and don't take Levo in the 24 hours prior to test, delay and take straight after. This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results
