Hi. I'm a newbie to this forum but not to thyroid issues. Medicated with Carbimazole and have a London Marathon place for April 2018. Does anyone have experience of training with an overactive thyroid and specifically, about how to handle a spiking heart rate? Visited consultant last week can't put me on beta blockers for the palpitations and won't increase meds either. Thank you

Overactive thyroid & marathon training
In trying to control Graves’ disease or HYPERthyroid disease it’s vutal to control your energy and muscle strength .. especially
When having palpitations
I woukd think you’d be very negligent and misinformed if you consider Marathon training at this stage in your health
Advice should’ be to teach yourself how to rest and excercise only moderately with due care and attention to your thyroid ...
B Vitamins are crucial for recovery as well as Magnesium
And D3
Good luck

When I was being treated for Graves I wasn’t able to take beta blockers so I had to just sit things out until the palpitations settled down. I got them back when I needed an increase in my levo but once I was at the correct level for me they went completely.
I kept going to my gym and doing Pilates throughout my treatment but I scaled my efforts back. I used to do long distance walking but even with going to the gym etc it was a long time before I felt able to go for a very long walk.
The London Marathon seems quite ambitious for someone who is hyper. I certainly couldn’t have considered it even though I was determined Graves wasn’t going to stop me doing the things I liked and wanted to do. Mind you I was in my mid sixties when my Graves started so if you have youth on your side it might be possible.
less youth now I'm in the 2nd half of life
Ooh no- rest rest, i was diagnosed back in july with hyper and doctor signed me off work and im on my 3rd month off work now as not back to my old self yet, it takes several months for our bodies to recover as do finding the correct meds and doses.
Please be very cautious as being hyper can ve dangerous without scaremongering you but like hospital docs and nurses told me your body is under alot of stress particulary your heart.
I was on veta blockers only for a short while and then had to stop them. I think you really need to re-consider the state of your health at present- im sure other hypers will help and comment. Ha i feel nervous for you.xx😨😨😨 good luck.
the consultant didn't advise against it. Speaking with my GP this week about the palpitations so hoping to get some clarity there.
Well good luck and be safe. One gp told me yes you can go to work but i coyldnt handle it as i worked in a busy busy office and alot of walking and upstairs- i looked haggered at the time and very poorly. Take care.😊
