Overactive thyroid results

Hi I am new to this site and was wondering if it's possible for natural remedies to cause thyroid issues . I've had nodules for many years and these have now become toxic and have been causing issues with my levels for several months . I currently take a maca remedy for the menopause and wonder if this is what is causing my problems and if so would it all settle back to normal if I stop taking the maca? I am waiting for further referral to consider rai treatment so also would this be a good idea?

I have no idea about the medication you take for menopause. I'm overactive due to Graves' disease and that is said to be a genetic autoimmune disease although no one in my family has Graves but do have MS and diabetes in family which are also autoimmune diseases.

Think you will have to wait until you see the consultant. They will test you to find out cause of overactive thyroid. There's always a cause. The NHS website gives all the causes.

I would hazard a guess that the menopause meds have nothing to do with your overactive thyroid.

Thk u for yr reply My condition is caused by the nodules but a friend has said that some herbal medication can have an effect on thyroid conditions and as the doctors don't recognise herbal medication I wondered if anyone had heard anything. I will speak with the consultant

Macs seems to stimulate the endocrine system so it may settle back to normal without the maca

I found safe in a pure form helped me with menopause plus cutting out caffeine alcohol spicy food and chocolate. Also Luke warm drinks rather than hot. Sudden change of temperature just triggered flushes.

Do you have Hashimotos?

Hi Kate not quite sure what I've got other than the nodules I've had on the thyroid have now turned toxic . Last October I was told my reading was overactive then a later reading showed the levels had come down but after my recent text the levels were back to what they were last year. My friend did say that she thought the maca herbal remedy could be affecting my thyroid and I wondered if that was the reason for the variation as I don't always take the maca

What came first the nodules or the maca?

I'm assuming you already had the nodules then the maca are upsetting them. I had the same recently with Rhodiola. It affected my nodules and gave me like a mastitis.

I'd stop if you think it's upsetting your nodules.

Some nodules produce thyroid hormone so will tip your results over and give you hyperthyroid symptoms.

Get your thyroid antibodies tested for Hashimotos. It is auto immune and very common. Another cause for nodules. Worth eliminating as if you have Hashimotos there's things you should/shouldn't be doing.

This sounds interesting.

I will check about hashimotos and stop the maca. I have been referred to a second endocrinologist for radio active iodine treatment for the nodules but maybe I will ask them to wait. The articles are very interesting thank you ever so take care
