Chest pain

Started taking Thyroxine yesterday. Since yesterday afternoon I’ve been experiencing some chest pain on and off. Could this be a symptom, a reaction or something I need to take notice of? X

Lisasue87,

Chest pain is not a typical adverse reaction to Levothyroxine. My GP practice advises patients with chest pain to go to A&E. You could phone NHS 111 to see what they advise.

I sometimes suffer from chest pains, I thought it could be related to my medication so I went to the doctor for an ecg. Nothing sinister found they put it down to anxiety.

Rather than worrying go to see your doctor and get them to check it out for you. Chest pain should always be investigated.

The chest is a large area 😊 Is it the breastbone - sternum ? Does it hurt when you take a deep breath ?

Could be caused by your low levels of everything as detailed in your previous thread. What steps have you taken with your supplements to improve things ? Thyroxine does not work well when vitamins and minerals are low.

Yes,angina type pains can follow from taking Levo .Dr Joan Gomez said easily treated with beta blockers. But they may affect conversion to T3 and you may need as I did to have a higher dose than you would have had without beta blockers.

What dose have you been given to start with.?

I’m not suggesting you shouldn’t take it seriously but in my case, I get chest pains when I need to attend to low ferritin.

When I started Thyroxine they gave me 50 mcg. I got chest pain and I was was started on lower dose which resolved it. Body needs to get used to it. But I would still get your Doctors advice.

So the pain got worse and I was feeling very unwell so rang 111 who sent an ambulance (and I felt like a big drama queen!) but my heart rate was low and erratic and there were some abnormalities on the ecg so had to go in. Once in A&E everything had settled so they think it’s syptoms of the thyroid issue plus maybe reaction to the meds. Feeling utterly silly but happy it’s all settled down xx

Low nutrients will make any symptoms worse. I had to improve my iron and ferritin quite dramatically before I stopped getting chest pain.
