Do you have the ranges for those (the numbers in brackets next to the result)? Though I suspect a TSH of 28 will be outside any range! Are you in the UK?

Tsh 0.2 - 4.2

Free T4 12 - 22

Free T3 3.1 - 6.8

In uk

Do you have the ranges for these numbers. The reason being that labs differ and it makes it easier to comment. However if your TSH is 28 you are very hypothyroid.

Well it certainly seems like absolute proof of hypothyroidism, even when only looking at TSH - did the doctor not give a reason why he/she wasn't going to prescribe? If you have hypothyroid symptoms I would ask for a second opinion with another doctor or a referral to and endocrinologist.

I have hypo symptoms but I have been told I am too thin and young to be given meds thanks

"I have been told I am too thin and young to be given meds thanks"

How utterly stupid. Would they say something similar to someone with diabetes or other condition.

You can be thin and hypo.

You can be young and hypo. Children get diagnosed with hypo.

How old are you?

See a different doctor, kick up a fuss, scream and shout, whatever it takes. With a TSH of 28 and both free Ts below range you need a prescription for Levo now.

Or change surgery.

Age 27 and too young to be hypo? Poppycock!

I was diagnosed younger than that, my step-grandaughter was diagnosed at 14.

Just go and see another GP.

TSH > 10 and/or FT4 below range = primary hypothyroidism.

could the doctor have misread TSH 28 as 2.8...???

Are these NHS results or private ones? Even if private, they're sufficiently out of range that a GP should accept them rather than repeat them.

As said above, you need to book an appointment with a different GP and discuss these results as without any other explanation they are strongly indicative of hypothyroidism, irrespective of your age and size. Your TSH is high above the top of the range, your FT4 is below the reference range, as is the FT3.

Unless there's another explanation, a sensible and competent GP will start you on a modest dosage of levothyroxine and instruct you to return for blood tests in 6 weeks or so at which time there will be a tweak in the dosage and this cycle will continue until you're appropriately dosed.

If you've had any vitamin and mineral levels results, can you quote them with their reference ranges, please? If you've not had them, when you see the GP, because hypothyroidism tends to be a fellow-traveller with poor gut absorption, you should request tests for ferritin, folate, vitamins D and B12 etc.

Good Luck and please let us know how the appointment goes with the GP.

Results GP ones and vitamin and minerals are deficient thanks

Lily7778 profile image
Lily7778 in reply to ITYFIALMCTT

Ferritin 15 (30 - 400)

Folate 3.8 (4.6 - 18.7)

Vitamin B12 189 (190 - 900)

Vitamin D 23.1

OK - my advice, and that of other people stands - you should make an appointment as soon as you can.

To state the obvious, all of those vitamin and mineral results are below the reference range. You need to discuss whether:

you're iron deficient or have iron deficiency anaemia;

you're both folate deficient and below range for B12 - the complication is that you might need investigation for B12 deficiency as the symptoms of iron, folate, and B12 deficiency can make each other. In that case, you need to be investigated for B12 deficiency before you start folate supplementation;

you're probably in the severe deficiency category or (at best) the deficiency category for your local lab - whichever, you are in need of loading doses of vitamin D.

Hi - on your other post you have quoted Tsh of 6.2 ,ft4 of 11.5 and ft3 3.1. Now even without me giving ranges, those are a drastic order of difference in results, not down to daily variation, for instance. So is there a reason for difference, like 3 months apart, for instance, so we can better help with explanation?

These ones are current and the other ones were done 4 months ago

Lily7778,

In your previous posts the results are quite different. Please clarify which are the correct results.

Lily7778,

Your thyroid was failing back in July to have TSH 6.2 and by not treating you then your GP has allowed you to become overtly hypothyroid with TSH 28 and FT4 and FT3 below range. You need thyroid replacement as soon as possible. See another GP at your practice or change practice.

You should also write a letter of complaint to the practice manager about your GP's lack of knowledge and total ignorance in saying you are too young and thin to be hypothyroid in the face of your thyroid results.
