hello all ive been for my usual bloods this morning, i was there for 8am fasted and no meds so picked up my fasting card no3.
This was my third visit here and was told on previous occassions you dont need to fast etc, well the nurse i had today was not so forgiving even though i did fight my corner and to cut a long story short was told fasting is not required for thyroid and i can come anytime off the day as it makes no difference and basically they would do it this time but next time do not pick up a fasting green card and wait in the normal bloods queue- which takes ages. It looks like i will have to get there early and pass out from waiting of starvation or go in the afternoon- she said there are rules to follow and i could be taking a fasting patient's space when i dont need it. 😊

She was angry you were in the 'wrong' queue. Just go into the queue for non-fasting as it will make her happy and you don't have to be bothered fighting your corner.
They have no understanding that levothyroxine is a hormone.
I always ask for the earliest test but the earliest this time was 9.45 so will be interested to see the results. I always get a copy. I think the GP would want to see someone whose results were abnormal but it hasn't happened to me 'yet'.
Thankyou shaws but im hyper with hashis and on carbimazole,ha i know everyone loses track on whos on what. Yes thinking about it further i will get there for 8am as usual take a normal bloods card- as they start fasters first and then voila i shouldnt have to wait more than 40 mins hopefully. Xx
In my local hospital the blood draws start at 7 (we take a ticket like at deli counters) and even when I get there at 06:20, I'm never number 1 in the queue
Lol its a nightmare isnt it- mine starts at 8am so i was there for 7.50am and just 3 fasters and 6 normal bloods. It looks like i will have to try and get there fo 7.20am and grab that NO1 card. Yes!!! Thankgod its only once a month.😨
You don't need early morning fasting tests because you are hyperthyroid. The advice to fast and have early morning tests is for hypothyroid patients who may need to show higher TSH to get a diagnosis or Levothyroxine dose increase or to prevent a Levothyroxine dose reduction.
Thankyou clutter its just that i get conflicting views from other people that you should go in the morning. But i will go afternoon instead as it will be easier.x
So why bother telling them whether you fasted or not? Just take a non-fasting card or lie or say you never eat breakfast. Don't go in the afternnon as your TSH will be much lower. Ignore the jobs-worth nurse (or get glucose tested as well - that has to be fasting). Our surgery doesn't have any card system and I've never been asked.
Hi i have mine done at the hospital and i have got to say it was probably my fault as i did take the green fasting card and they read the blood forms and noticed it wasnt fasting, so next time im going to take the normal bloods white card and sit and wait abit longer and like you said i can carry on doing the same.thanks angel of the north.😇
I’d be tempted to tell whoever doles out appointments that I had to be at work or something like that which is why I needed to be treated early and not bother to tell them that I’d been fasting.
I always fast and if I’ve not got an early slot then I just get up later and go straight to the surgery then eat when I get out.
Hi Rmichelle I had my blood done last week as you no got a pho he call to have them done again in 2 weeks no explanation why said she. Couldn't tell me phoned endo left a message and they still haven't rung back I'm at a loss .the main thing isnobody as ever told me to have bloods do me at specific time never heard of it.can this make a difference to the outcome xx
Hi there sorry you are in abit of a pickle, i have been told from forum users you should get your bloods done first thing- nothing to eat before you go and take your thyroid meds when bloods have been done. It does affect your levels going anytime of the day as people have said in the above posts even though doctors and nurses would disagree.xx dont worry about that now just go in the morning next time.xxx keep going😊😊cuppa time soon.
Helli any luck with chasing your bloods they probably said to recheck them again in 2 weeks as your bloods are maybe lowering pretty quickly? At least tbey are keeping a eye out for you, not like mine!!😨xx
It depends on whether you are hyperthyroid (overactive) or hypothyroid (underactive). There is no requirement for those with hyperthyroid to have early appointments and blood taken before they take medication, that's only for hypothyroid.
