Itchy skin

I am interested to see commentioned on itchy skin / taking thyroid. I've been on thyroid about 6 months now. Today I think there MUST be something I can take, or put on my skin to relieve the maddening itching. I try a cream, then wait and try another, then try nothing - on and on. It seems nothing enetrates to relieve the dryness, itching, roughness with bumps where I've scratched. Always scratching and I wear gloves when I can to stop breaking the skin in my demented scratching. Help!!!!

terieaton2000 Have you tried a different brand of Levo, you could be reacting to one of the fillers and may be better with a different brand.

What an excellent suggestion! I am hugely allergic to linalool, limonene, ti tree oil, eucalyptus oil etc, therefore anything with essential oils. Make up, toothpaste, household cleaners - how sad! - are a nightmare. I am taking Synthroid Levothyroxine Sodium 25 mcg so guess I will contact Mylan? Many thanks.

terieaton2000,

You have me confused. Mylan don't make Synthroid - that is from AbbVie? :-)

Are you in the USA?

I think you can find details of all USA medicines, including levothyoxine, here:

What are your levels thyroids like, 25mcg. is a very low starter dose.

You may need an increase.

TSH 3.38 and GP happy with that. Mind you I sometimes come out of a consult & wonder who the patient was that he just saw!!!!!

Hi

I was left on a dose of 50mcg. for 18 months. because my TSH was "in range" It was only when I joined this forum that I learnt that when on thyroid meds. the dose needs increasing until TSH is under one.

I use to itch a lot when I needed a dose increase.

I would insist that your doctor increases your dose.

You could take an anti histamine one hour before your thyroid meds. If that stops it is most definitely that and most probably the fillers. The Pharmacist should be able to recommend another brand but you may have to trial more than one before you find one that suits. Most have several fillers so it's not that straightforward to eliminate the rogue one

Thank you. I saw chemist today but didn't think of this solution. Good idea.

Waking up this morning to skin like sandpaper it's so dry, I wonder how much is due to the dryness. At last count I've tried 31 different creams, ointments, gels etc, many on prescription, others after consulting pharmacist. I wear cotton gloves to try & stop scratching but nothing seems to help.

It really sounds like an allergic reaction. Years ago My doctor prescribed hydrocodone which was generic Vicodin, and it made me very itchy. I didn’t complain but took a benedryl cap with every dose. when I finally told my doctor, he was upset and told me that it was dangerous for me to do that, that iI might be allergic to something that could have bad repercussions, so he changed me to the brand name, Vicodin and I never had any more trouble! My both sisters had the same reactin to the generic!
