Are you diagnosed and on Levothyroxine?

If you can't get full thyroid and vitamin testing from GP

thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin...

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have money off offers. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw . Both often run money off offers

All thyroid tests should be done as early as possible in morning and fasting and don't take Levo in the 24 hours prior to test, delay and take straight after. This gives highest TSH and most consistent results

Email Louise at a Thyroid UK for list of recommended thyroid specialists louise.roberts@thyroiduk.org.uk

Essential to know if you have high thyroid antibodies, this is Hashimoto's or autoimmune thyroid disease

About 90% of hypothyroidism in UK is due to Hashimoto's.

Hashimoto's very often affects the gut, leading to low stomach acid, malabsorption causing low vitamin levels and leaky gut.

Low vitamins that affect thyroid are vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12. When they are too low they stop Thyroid hormones working.

Ask GP to test these if not been done already

Post results if you have them now, always get actual results and ranges on every test

According to Izabella Wentz the Thyroid Pharmacist approx 5% with Hashimoto's are coeliac, but over 80% find gluten free diet helps significantly. Either due to direct gluten intolerance (no test available) or due to leaky gut and gluten causing molecular mimicry (see Amy Myers link)

But don't be surprised that GP or endo never mention gut, gluten or low vitamins. Hashimoto's is very poorly understood

Changing to a strictly gluten free diet may help reduce symptoms.

Low stomach acid can be an issue

Hashimoto's can be triggered by gut infections or glandular fever too

Great film definitely shows why just testing TSH is inadequate and it's so complex.

Why are some so nasty to patients who are expecting them to

be helpful and give them a diagnosis.

If he refers to psychiatrists probably it is one of them who'd probably give you a better diagnosis that him.

You need a TSH, T4, T3, Free T4, Free T3 and thyroid antibodies. Even if most of these are in 'normal' range if antibodies are present doctor should prescribe.

All tests should be at the earliest, fasting (you can drink water) and allow a gap of 24 hours between last dose of levothyroxine and the test(ifyou were taking it).

You also need B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate.

Post the results with the ranges on a new post for comments. Ranges are important as no responses can be made without them.

When your results come back get a copy and post them on this forum with the lab ranges e.g. TSH = 3.25 (0.3-4.5). Someone will comment. It is common for people with hypothyroidism to have very low levels of Vitamins and nutrients. Low Vitamin D is very common, and often gives people aching joints. Taking an over-the-counter multivitamin or supplement usually isn't enough if you are low on Vitamin D. You need really high doses to get your levels up, then a maintenance dose to keep them there. Anyway we need to see some results first. There is hope!
