Under active tyroid

Hi,

Does anyone have an under active tyroid and if they do so they take eltroxin. My dose has been upped to 150mg from 125mg. Worried the tyroid problem may be getting worse? :(

Well, it probably is. But, that's the nature of the beast. And, even if it isn't getting any worse, it isn't just suddenly going to get better. This is for life.

Do you have high antibodies?

Yes 2000 antibodies. Not easy as just don't know what the progression will be as I've not changed dosage for so long. Shocked me

When did you last have a test? Perhaps it's time to have one, and find out if it's getting worse. :)

Yeah definitely need to see an endocrinologist soon. Find out what's going on

What makes you think an endocrinologist will know? You might be better off getting your GP to do the tests.

Hello Polly35,

I started on pig thyroid replacement in 1985 (I was 26 years old and it totally changed my life!). Perhaps I should add that I also have Turner Syndrome (mosaic form). Then I moved to Switzerland where natural thyroid is illegal. From about 1990 to last year I was on Eltroxin.

At some point, 3 years ago, after a viral infection in the throat, it stopped working for me and I upped the dose (doubled it - upon my doctor's advice). A year later (Nov 2016) I went into hyperthyroidism (a terrible condition!). To make a long story short, I checked the (new) ingredients and found they'd changed the lactose filler to maize (to which I'm highly allergic) and acacias wood fibers.

After a week of no thyroid supplement - to clear the system, as it were - I changed to Tirosint (manufactured in Lugano, Switzerland) because it is the only one with nothing but gelatin + distilled water + active substance. Six months later I am at a dosage slightly lower than what I took 3 years ago and this is working for me. At least for now! Good luck!
