Did the rib pain stop when you dropped your higher dosage of D3?
Much will depend on how well you respond to a dose of D3 that is higher than 800iu per day - how are you with 2000iu (tho' that may well take a long time to bring your levels up to the preferred range)? A number of people report pain when taking vitamin D3 because the bones are rebuilding and they swell slightly within the rigid covering of the bone and this can last for a while - there's no way to know if this is what is happening for you.
We can get pain when starting in higher doses of vitamin D, but it doesn't mean necessarily you should stop.

Magnesium supplements can help
I had terrible bone pain when started on vitamin D supplements. Tried a vitamin D lamp, also caused same bone pain. This proved to me that it was due to increase in levels, not due to the supplements. Went back to supplements in preference to lamp. Pain faded after 3-4 months
