Thyroid Test abnormal....question

My TSH and T3 were normal, but T4 skyrockted. Doctor says not to worry and come back in a month. I feel terrible and have racing heartbeats.

Is this normal.

There's no info on your profile, have you been diagnosed with thyroid disease, are you on Levo? If so how much and how long

Please give us some more info and blood test results and ranges, before any one can reply with anything useful

You need to get the actual results and ranges

Will look like this as an example

TSH 1.2 (0.5-4.5)

FT4 20 (12-22)

FT3 3.2 (3.0-6.6)

Do you have high thyroid antibodies

Also have you had vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 tested? If so post results

Welcome to the forum, Cherry123.

Can you post your TSH, FT4 and FT3 results and ranges? If you don't have them ask your GP receptionist to print them off or read them out to you.

Can you also confirm whether or not you took Biotin or a B Complex vitamin before your blood test?

Hi, Thank you for responding.

My TSH says 1.74 (0.36 - 3.74)

T4 16.0 (4.8 - 13.9)

Ferritin 57.7 (8.0 - 252.0)

T3 1.30 (0.60 - 1.81)

My D3 has always been fine. I take B-Complex and Biotin for hair loss so yes probably took it before blood test. Should I not be taking that with synthroid?

Nothing wrong with taking biotin, but it can affect how the blood test equipment works

So recommended to stop 3-5 days before

Cherry123,

Biotin can skew blood test results and may be why your T4 rocketed. T4 16.0 is mildly over range so I think it is unlikely to be causing your symptoms. As others have posted, skip biotin for a day or two prior to any blood tests.

Ferritin is optimal halfway through range. You can raise ferritin by supplementing iron with 1,000mg vitamin C to aid absorption and minimise constipation. Iron should be taken 4 hours away from Levothyroxine.

Hemochromotosis runs in my family, so not sure I should be taking iron supplements, but I try to eat iron foods as much as I can. Thanks.

Cheryl ... I was reading recently that Biotin can skew blood results dramatically ... maybe it would be a good idea to read up on that ..

Personally I tried Biotin to help me ... and didn't notice any effect

It was only when all my numbers were good that my head hair came back

But .. strangely not my body hair 🤷‍♀️

Can I take statins with synthroid. /Thank you all for answering.

If statins are recommended for high cholesterol, do not take it. Cholesterol is need for all hormones and will correct once your thyroid levels are right. Have you been on 50 mcgs. of Synthroid for 3 months? It would be unusual to have hyper symptoms on that low dose so maybe your biotin is causing the high reading. Your symptoms may be caused by staying on too low dose of hormone. Your TSH is still a little high and you FT3 is still a little low so it's hard to think you are overmedicated. Your adrenal glands can give those symptoms. It uses adrenaline and cortisol to keep metabolism stable. Not a good feeling.
