If this is the first abnormal TSH result you have had your GP may not want to make a diagnosis of hypothyroidism until a second TSH test in a few weeks is also abnormal. TSH can be elevated by non-thyroidal illness such as a virus or infection so some doctors wait 2-3 months to repeat the test by which time the virus/infection will be expected to have cleared.
