Pre/sub clinical Hypothyroidism?

Hi

So went to my doctor feeling lethargic, fatigue at any given moment, lower leg aches/cramps, carpal tunnel (long standing, recent hiatus hernia diagnosed and inability to lose weight despite eating far less due to said Hernia, generally not feeling myself and just so you know I never go to the docs unless I have to!).

Bloods taken 5th June 2017 - TSH 3.69 mu/L and all other levels taken normal. A week later I found out that all the females in my family have underactive thyroid - mum sister cousins aunt etc... (family reunion not seen many for 30 yrs!) so I go back to docs to discuss results and give him this knowledge and more test done - 3 weeks later TSH 1.62 Free T4 12.7 and Free T3 4.2 - only fiding being y serum inorganic phosphate level as on the floor. So doctors say all is normal. I don't feel any better despite given high dose of Vit D and carpal tunnel getting worse and now noted by 3 independent people that my memory is shocking, missing appointments etc- I have to agree :(

Not sure why my levels would change os quick and do I have any case in asking for a therapeutic trial to see if it would make nay difference? Any advice gratefully received

N x

Nickcat,

TSH is highest early in the morning and lowest in the afternoon/evening. If you tested at the same time of day the likeliest reason for TSH fluctuating is that you have autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto's). Ask your GP to check thyroid antibodies next time you have a thyroid blood test which should be early in the morning when TSH is highest and fast (water only) as TSH drops after eating and drinking.

NHS won't diagnose hypothyroidism until TSH is over range (usually >5.0) or FT4 is below range.

200mcg selenium is good thyroid support.

Thanks for reply, the last bloods were non fasting and were at similar times. I shall look into selenium too. Am I way off line asking for a therapeutic trial do you think?

just seems to me that we have been tackling symptoms in isolation but when you seem them together they point towards hypothyroidism. X

Nickcat,

I don't think your GP will agree to a therapeutic trial with your current results.
