You can take it when you like, before or after a meal. Splitting the dose would apply if you were prescribed say 20mg 3 x daily but you are only taking once daily. Try not to overthink it as you will make yourself more anxious 😉

Hi. I have been taking carbo for 3 years. I've found the morning best. Take the tablet all in one go (no need to split into 3 doses throughout the day) with some food before or after is fine. try to take it at around the same time everyday. It doesn't matter if you are an hour late but try to keep it consistent as best you can. Alex

Ps. You make most of your thyroid hormones in the couple of hours just before you wake up in the morning. This is why I take it first thing in the morning. Alex

Do you really mean "make" - rather than, say, "release"?

Not sure. I think it was my Endo that told me that the thyroid makes hormones just before you wake up. But I'd expect make is then followed by release. We discussed this when I asked about what was the best time to take my 20 mg per day carbo meds and should I split the dose throughout the day. He explained that taking it in the morning was the best due to the thyroid making hormones a short while before you wake up.

Thanks for responding.

However his logic makes little sense to me!

Carbimazole stops the synthesis of thyroid hormone - not its release. Taking it in the morning, after the thyroid has made the thyroid hormone, seems precisely the opposite of what would make sense. Better, surely, to take the carbimazole in the early hours of the morning (or, possibly, last thing at night) so it prevents the manufacture of more hormone before waking up?

I took mine this morning had to start it immediatley. I can understand what you mean helvella, i just want whats best for me, i think i saw another thread a few days ago about someone else taking their meds early hours of the morning but i think that would make me feel sick.

Rmichelle,

In my view, it is unlikely to make much difference to thyroid hormone levels what time of day you take the tablet! But I could be very wrong.

(Split dosing is another issue.)
