If you don't need propranolol then best to come off it but speak to doc. I was told by a cardiologist that they prevent the conversion of T4 to T3. Which of course is why they are taken when hyperthyroid as people have too much T3. If you have anxiety, it could be low vitamin levels so get those checked out while reducing propranolol.

HI Nanaedake, I was hyper when I was put on propranolol, but since I, ve gone from hyper to hypo still have slight palpatations and migraines.I will be going to see a private Endo next week so hopefully he can retest all my vit levels and my t4 and t3 levels too.Lets hope I get somewhere this time, been feeling unwell for long enough. Thanks for your reply.

Shaws makes a good point, you need to be careful and check with doc first before stopping.

I had side effects from propranolol, tried different kinds and in the end they caused more problems than they solved but that's just me everyone is different. I hope I never need them again. I didn't realise I was getting side effects, I thought it was my thyroid. Getting vitamins optimal helped me a lot.

Hi @sylus911 I was just wondering if you are taking propranolol for high blood pressure?

I was taking it for a few years for severe anxiety but quit a month ago when I joined this site as well as quitting and/or tapering down my other psychiatric medication. You're probably taking it for blood pressure which is something different and I don't know much about at all, but I will say that taking a nightly magnesium drink and also Ashwagandha, before dinner has helped a lot with the physical symptoms of my anxiety which is what the propranolol was helping with.

Anyway… Although I found it to be helpful with my particular problems after learning that it can make hypothyroidism worse I decided to quit taking it. Of course I'm not encouraging you to do that if you're taking it for a heart condition (necessarily) without a second opinion at least. Hope you don't mind my responding.

Hi Jill I was prescribed propranolol when I was hyper with severe anxiety,I am on medication for blood pressure but it's a very low dose 5mg a day.Although the propranolol did help at the time I feel I don't really need to take them now,all I can do is see how I get on with out them.Thank you for responding all information is good,i,ve always tried not to have to rely on tablets but there's times when you have to.Thanks again.

I assume you are taking propropanol for fast heart rate/palpitations?

If so, you must be careful if you are thinking of stopping them. Some of us get palpitations when hormone level is too low or too high, so it is quite difficult to decide sometimes.

Thanks for asking this question Sylus911 as I was about to ask the same. I'm taking Propranalol to prevent migraine, which it does, but it clearly affects my NDT and I can't face another winter like the last one - even the one cold day this month sent me spiraling downhill. So going to GP on Monday to ask about coming off them - but even reducing the dose seems to bring on a migraine. What a choice!

Hi dina7.Dont envy you the same as myself.Migraines are very dibilitating.I was put on propranolol for migraines, palpation,s and anxiety, but I always felt I very fatigued,it's hard to say as I think you get those symptoms anyway.I,ve been ok since I cut down still taking half a tab a day.Im not feeling as tired BUT is it because I'm having a good few weeks of feeling ok.Off to see a different endo next week so fingers crossed.Good luck with GP.Wish I could've help more all people are different when taking medication.
