Unwell on T4? I urge you to get DIO2 test

A month or so ago I paid £146 for a DIO2 genetic test from Regenerus Labs regeneruslabs.com/

It confirmed exactly what I had thought for many years - that I have a genetic fault where my body cannot convert T4 into T3. It was a lot of money for me but I saved up over 2 months and it has been worth every penny. It's a saliva test so it's easy to keep spitting into a glass tube. I really urge everyone who feels unwell on T4 to get this test then you know for sure what is happening.

Hi Marigold, so glad you have found the root cause of your illness. I had the test too, but it was negative. I am a poor converter, but there are other issues going on with me, such as adrenals, autoimmunity and toxic overload.

Its good that you know the reason. What is your plan now with this information if you dont mind me asking?

It's a bit more to fight endo & GP to keep my T3. So far fortunately I've still got T3 as I argued I've been on it since 1995 & doing well. But the DIO2 information answers so many questions for me, ie feeling so ill on T4 only, and also the reason the low dose (20 or 30 mcg of T3 a day) failed to make me well despite TSH being ok for doctors. I feel much more informed about my own health situation and in a better place to argue my case.

Thats good. Fingers crossed this will enable your T3 to continue with very good justification marigold22.

I also did DIO2 test recently, after I made enormous improvement starting on small addition of T3

I was confirmed positive too - heterozygous (from one parent) rather than homozygous (from both)

Currently on NHS T3 prescription. Hopefully DIO2 result may help keep it

I had this test done too and it showed I have the heterozygous conversion problem. I feel so much better on Liothyronine.

That's really useful advice, think I will give that a whirl.

Hi Marigold, I got mine through the post and am filling in the form, when it asks for your gp name. Do you give them you own gp? Or do I say thyroid uk . I hope I will get the test results and not my own Dr.

I phoned Regenerus on this question - about involving my GP. Do NOT put any doctor's name on the form. If in doubt, give Regenerus a phone call, they are very helpful. You have paid the extra £60.ish in order to get Regenerus' counsellor to counsel you on the results. It's a legal requirement to have counselling on the results as some genetic tests can result in devastating results and cause trauma, eg the Big C.

Ok won't put my Drs name , don't want them involved. I know in the past with Thyroid Uk tests they provided a name of one of their Drs. They said they can't post the results it would be nice to have them as evidence though.

If I remember correctly, when I phoned Regenerus they told me to leave Doctor's name blank. The place to write doctor's name is so they can send the results to that doctor for the counselling. So as Regenerus are organising the counselling, no doctor's name is required.

You get the results emailed to you and you can print them out; after the counsellor has phoned you and told you.
