Has anyone else on here developed thyroid issues following a recent whiplash?

Hello

I have only just discovered that there is a possible link between developing hypothyroidism and whiplash. I had a minor car crash last March and now I have thyroid problems. Anyone else experienced this?

I suffered a whiplash injury (car accident) in late 1996, and was diagnosed with hypothyroidism (Hashimoto's) four years later. I have no idea if there is a connection, and no doctor has ever mentioned this possibility.

Someone mentioned it to be on this forum yesterday and I've been googling it ever since! There is a definite link! Might even see if any chiropractors in my area know about it and can help in anyway?

Good idea, and it would really be interesting to know if you do find out anything! The problem with most doctors is that they don't care about the reason why you're hypothyroid. In my case, they just tested for antibodies and anti-thyroglobuline and told me I had Hashimoto's...end of story.

I will definitely let you know if I find anything out. What were your antibody results if you don't mind me asking? Mine are quite low (15 for peroxidase and 10 for thyroglobulin) and I don't know if that makes me hashimotos or not! 😂😂

I no longer have the lab results with reference ranges, but I do remember my anti-TPO levels were above 6000 at the time of diagnosis, and I was told that was very high.

I had a whip-lash injury in 2001. Soon after this, a goitre became visible in my neck. I had no idea there might be a link. However, I am not sure if I had a thyroid problem before the accident.

Had whiplash aged about 15/16...at 18/19 diagnosed.

There's definitely a link then isn't there!

Hidden - in Dr Peatfield's book 'Your Thyroid and How to Keep it Healthy", he writes

"Thyroid Trauma

........

One obvious example here is whiplash injury. Something like 30% of people who suffered whiplash injury have been found to develop Hypothyroidism. ....... "

It was one of the questions he asked me when I saw him many years ago.

Oh my goodness!! 30%!! I've never come across Dr Peatfield? I will get his book now. Would love to speak to a doctor who understands all this instead of fumbling around on my own!!

Do a search for Dr Peatfield on here. He is very well respected, and beloved by so many, works privately because he wouldn't toe the NHS line and was being hounded by the GMC so relinquished his license which means he can no longer prescribe but can advise.

Treat yourself to his book amazon.co.uk/Your-Thyroid-H... an excellent and easy read.

I believe he now only works from his Crawley clinic as he is advancing in years and has suffered poor health in recent years.

And because he is hypothyroid himself he really does understand.

Wow! I have ordered his book. He sounds amazing! Thank you so much for this information-knowledge really is power for me at the moment. I haven't been able to work a single day since my car crash last March so I am so determined to get better. I would have never known in a million years whiplash could hurt my thyroid. I wonder if my gp would listen to this sort of information so that I could add it to my insurance claim? I haven't gone to my gp since last spring because all they did was offer me anti depressants for my anxiety symptoms?! I just knew deep down that they wouldn't help and that something else was going on.

To be honest, your GP would have to be very open minded to accept this. Dr P is basically considered a rebel by the majority of the medical profession, but he has helped many people get well who the NHS have failed.

Thank god for him then ❤

Interesting! I had whiplash during a rear-shunt car smash in the early 1970s. Some time later I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism followed by a further diagnosis of fibromyalgia. Have never been the same since that accident! Always wondered what the connection, if any, might be!

It's incredible isn't it! Suddenly realising that something so big has been overlooked. Like a missing piece in your health jigsaw.

Yes - whiplash injury in 1997 and went downhill from there. 3 years later diagnosed hypo and had op for follicular adenoma on thyroid. Whilst a chiropracter will see the link i don't hold out for much hope from the medical establishment!

I've always wondered if it's more the trauma that triggers it as I developed hashimotos after the very long and traumatic birth of my daughter...
