You likely will have deficiency in B12, zinc as well as selenium and folate (depending on your symptoms). It is always advised to get nutrient levels checked when testing blood, so the key ones are B12, folate, ferritin and Vit D. Hope this helps...

I went through hell for years with a tongue that was 3 sizes too big for my gob & shiny raw patches on it. It was sore & kept me awake at night.

GP had no clue, but did refer me to ENT, who had no clue. Then referred to a Dental hospital. They did blood tests & advised my GP that I was deficient in Zinc & Folate and had TSH of 11, so should be treated for Thyroid. I did get supplemented Zinc & Folate, but nothing done with Thyroid. That took another 2-3 years.

Seeing a nice simple article like that makes me feel quite depressed at the depths the NHS has sunken to.

GPs no more than robots employed to scribble prescriptions on behalf of their paymasters, the pharmaceutical companies.

PS, my tongue is back to normal now.

I get IBS...was put on ?Fibogel...dreadful stomach cramps...almost fainting with the pain...now take a stool softener when needed......it all depends on the IBS reason, whether it is through constipation or not.......I'm much better now I've stopped the ?Fibogel.

You say they 'think' you have inflammatory bowelcancer disease....are they not SURE .?? A colostomy is a bit drastic if they're not sure !!! Do you mean a Colonoscopy ?? That I could understand..........if they're not sure then get a second opinion.......if they ARE SURE...then do what you need to do and I wish you SO MUCH LUCK....just go with the flow as they say....it's all you can do..If you are religious (if only part-time) then trust in your maker to see you through it....I shall be here online if you want to moan or complain if just to help in any way I can.x

Hi fishawree sore tongue and fatigue can be symptoms of a B12 deficiency. Us hypos are very often deficient in vitamins, would suggest you get tested for ferritin, folate, B12 and vit D these need to be atoptimal levels not just in range. If gp won't do them you could get them done privately , medichecks or blue horizon are both good, you order on line they send you kit do finger prick test at home send it back then usually you get results in 48 hours . I've found them to be very good.then post on here and knowledgeable members can advise if you need to supplement.but of cause it could also be you need increase in levo as well suggest to also post bloodtest results from thyroid when you get them .

Always swallow levothyroxine with one full glass of water on an empty stomach and wait an hour before eating.

Also ask GP to test, B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate as we can be deficient and that can also cause symptoms.

When you get a blood test for thyroid hormones it has to be at the very earliest, fasting (you can drink water) and allow a gap of approx 24 hours between last dose and test and take afterwards. This helps keep your TSH highest and GPs only seem to look at the TSH. The aim is a TSH of 1 or lower. Not somewhere in range as GPs believe.

Always get a print-out of your results with the ranges for your own records. If you have a query you can post your results.

WOW!...good to hear somebody asking for a ferritin test.......it costs 49p to the NHS....can help diagnose iron overload-heamachromatosis- which causes hair loss, fatigue, aching joints, osteoarthritis, itching skin and sometimes eventual cirrhosis of the liver, spleen damaged brain, heart etc ending with a liver transplant which costs £100,000 to the NHS.

routine testing for ferritin and ferritin saturation (stored...iron is a metal and collects in the organs of the body if overloaded) should be a normal thing for everybody to have and would save the ?nhs .millions in joint replacements etc.

That's a symptom of low B12 best to get tested. Needs to be over 600 but your Dr will tell you ok at much lower levels beware!

Also get Vit D folate and Ferritin checked while you're at it all can be low with hypothyroidism.

Sounds like piecrust tongue. That can certainly happen with hypothyroidism - when the tongue swells, and presses on the teeth all round. Can be very unpleasant.

Adequate treatment usually fixes it. But do note the people who have mentioned B12 because that too can cause tongue and gum issues.

In a nutshell...certainly those two things first.

Google scalloped tongue. All the above can be reasons for it so you need to have blood test to determine the cause. Watch alcohol intake. Eat foods that are clean and support your gut and liver.

I gave up dairy products and my tongue is not swollen or sore. I also have stopped getting ulcers on it. Was my sisters suggestion to help with constipation ( always a problem) and this is the other unexpected benefit. I also don't have "thick" saliva now and struggle less to swallow food 👍🏻Xx

Hi. Hope you feel better soon. Please have your B12 tested. I get v site tongue with anaemia and have B12 injections and take folate which have helped enormously. Post you results here when you have your blood results and you will get great advice from others on here. Take care.

Just a thought....too many sweets or sugar can give you a very sore tongue, sometimes at the very top of the tongue.......sugar also feeds cancer so it's a good idea to cut down if you can anyway. Good luck.

Hi fish, minerals are difficult to metabolise when you don't have enough stomach acid to break them down so if you find that your iron and B12 are low, this may be the cause. There are several ways to increase stomach acid, Betaine, HCL, or even apple cider vinegar which has so many other benefits adding probiotics and killing bacteria. Use the unfiltered type and take a teaspoon before meals.
