Hi just needed some advice. I've been hyperthyroid for over 2 years now. Tried carbimazole initially but my T3 and T4 levels were very erratic with every dose change so consultant decided to put me on block and replace treatment. Even with this we can't seem to get steady levels. Every 2 months when I see consultant the dose needs to be adjusted- sometimes it's going towards becoming hypo and sometimes hyper depending on how they have adjusted carbimazole/ levothyroxine dose. I know that I can't stay on block and replace forever ( already been on it since Apr 2016) so at what point would consultant stop meds and consider me having an op or radioactive iodine? I personally feel the tabs are not doing anything and this time round I haven't got appt to see consultant for 4 months because of shortages in NHS. I have started having reflexology for last 6 months and when I first started my thyroid, adrenal and pituitary glands in my feet were extremely painful but now after having regular reflexology they are fine. So I basically wanted to see if I could stop meds myself and see if my body will start regulating the hormones normally and if it doesn't than I assume I would be referred for radioactive or op?? So my question is do I have to wait for consultant to tell me to stop meds or can I try myself or will I be harming myself by doing this?

Npat2721,
I would wait until you see your consultant in 4 months and discuss how to stop B&R. If remission fails you can either resume Carbimazole, B&R or opt for RAI but RAI will make you hypothyroid within 6 months usually and you will then have to take Levothyroxine daily for the rest of your life.
