I have an unopened packet of maca from Christmas. Am I allowed it? It is supposed to boost energy and reduce anxiety etc but it is a cruciferous root. It would go in a nutriblend type smoothie.
Also should I stop taking my multivitamins and minerals? Has iron in. Im hypo.
Thanks

Not sure about Maca - I had some and it did boost energy but it didn't reduce anxiety - made me a bit jittery, but my adrenals were very wonky at the time!
As for multivits+minerals as a single supplement - don't like most of them, because they're cobbled together without a lot of thought. Most contain cyanocobalamin - which is the least absorbed version of B12; calcium (much better to take vitamin D and K2); and zinc oxide and magnesium oxide which can't be absorbed with the low stomach acid you get with being hypo.
Generally better to introduce one thing at a time and take minerals like iron away from Levo. I'd certainly recommend Betaine HCl for starters to help digest food properly and get the nutrients out of what you're eating.
I combined it with banana and almond milk in a smoothie - so not sure it was the maca that boosted energy. I went through about half a packet about two years ago ... I gave up on it..... possibly, because my digestion was rubbish at the time and I don't think it helped. Indigestion certainly doesn't help if you're getting anxiety (and vice versa)!!
Some green teas (that taste nice - I've had to try a few, some are like dishwater) are good for anxiety and staying awake due to the L-theanine / caffeine combination - add a bit of D-ribose which is a natural sugar that gets to the mitochondria (batteries in our cells) really fast - it's a good pick-me-up. N.B. Tea should be taken away from meals containing iron as tea binds with iron. If you want a gentler alternative - redbush / honeybush are good and are fine even with a sensitive tum.
Have you taken maca before? If you have, and it agrees with you, then there's no problem. If you haven't, and you want to try it, try a little bit and see what happens.
It's not a question of being 'allowed' something. It's a question of how that something affects you as an individual. Nothing is totally banned (except unfermented soy) but some things might upset you, and others won't. It's just trial and error finding out what is what. I took maca for a while, and it did absolutely nothing. Didn't make me feel any better, but didn't make me feel any worse, either. So, I abandoned it.

Yes. Multivit/min supplements tend to contain very little of anything to do any good and usually the wrong form. And if it contains iron that cancels out everything else. Iron needs to be taken on it's own, two hours away from other supplements.
