Hi RichardTH,

This forum is for people with thyroid and adrenal issues. You will get better help from healthunlocked.com/nras

Ask your pharmacist for alternative preservative free eye drops which may be more comfortable.

Hi, I have inflammatory arthritis and at the moment my eyes are incredibly dry. I really don't know why because it's quite sudden. I use HycoSan which I think is the over the counter version of Hylo forte.

I imagine your eyes must be terribly dry for your artificial tears to make them sting. My eyes don't normally sting unless they are really dry, then they sting a few times until they get lubricated enough. If I use Optichrom for any reason it always stings for a while. I just put up with it and either my eyes get used to the drops or they do what they are supposed to do and after awhile they no longer stings.

I've also got an eye bag that I put in the microwave for a little while - each different make have their own times - then I lie down with that over my eyes and it helps a lot.

I also like Theolose Duo and they do a 'gel' that I sometimes use at night, it's not a thick gel though so you can still see. I buy my Theolose gel from Amazon but I think you can get it from optician's shops.

Don't know if you've found the NRAS site here on HealthUnlocked, it's a good place to go with rheumatic problems.

I too have dry eye syndrome as well as thyroid issues and RA.

If the eye drops are causing stinging as they did with myself even the hypo preservative free ones were problematic my ophthalmologist discontinued them immediately and switched me to lacrilube which is applied at night. It causes blurring of the vision for about 20 minutes so my eye specialist told me tot insert a small amount in one eye wait til the blurriness had gone then apply the cream in the other eye. It is best done in bed. The cream has to be warmed up first to room temperature but should your eye specialist prescribe this then he or she will give you full instructions. Another excellent source of information is from an eye hospital where they usually have a helpline. For example Moorfields eye hospital in London.

Personally I would not try another type of eye drop as it could make things worse. The ones that at preservative free can cause problems as well as happened to me.

. Dry eyes is a nasty condition and must be taken seriously and can be linked to thyroid/adrenal issues.

There is lots of reliable advice and information about eye conditions especially dry eye syndrome online.

I would suggest googling Moorfields eye hospital, London and then looking at the appropriate category of eye condition. You may like to research Sjorens syndrome, this is an auto immune disease and connected to Thyroid disorders.
