Welcome to the forum, I-1958.

If you post your recent thyroid results and ranges we'll be able to tell you whether or not you are optimally dosed. If not, you will struggle to lose weight.

Thank you, never asked to see my labs before always trusted the Doctor. How can these affect your weight?

i-1958,

If you are undermedicated you are likely to gain weight and will find it almost impossible to lose weight.

At the moment I am taking 125 one day and 150 the next day

I-1958,

Your thyroid levels will tell us whether that is the optimal dose for you :)

Slimming World is not a healthy diet, because it is based on low/no-fat. The body needs fat, it should not be eliminated from the diet.

You need to optimise your T3.

l-1958 profile image
l-1958 in reply to greygoose

How do I do that?

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply to l-1958

First step is to find out what your FT3 level is. I doubt your doctor will test it, he doesn't sound very clued up. But, you can get it tested yourself. Details of private testing are on the Thyroid UK main page.

Ideally, you want

TSH

FT4

FT3

TPO ab

TG ab

vit d

vit B12

folate

ferritin

It's not just about hormones. You also need your nutrients optimal to lose weight.

greygoose in reply to greygoose

Actually, the whole purpose of thyroid hormone replacement, is to optimise your FT3. But, doctors don't know that. :(

l-1958 profile image
l-1958 in reply to greygoose

Well it's only taken me thirty years to find that out.....how silly do I feel:)

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply to l-1958

Not your fault, it's your doctor's. I doubt he knows, either!

l-1958 profile image

Think I need to have words with my Doctor, find out whats going on.

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply to l-1958

Good luck with that!

I remember 'having words' with one doctor, who sincerely believed that thyroid hormone replacement - T4+T3, at that time - was to 'kickstart' my gland to work again. He was so shocked when I told him my gland was dead and would never work again. How could that happen??? I have Hashi's, man!

I think you need to knock your Dr out personally! Your going to find that GP's and Endo's in this country don't care about us and are willing to bare face lie to us about the parameters of our illness ... I say put him on his arse, save yourself the lies and time and come to these forums for help!! In the 25 years that I have had it the most sound advice I have had is from these forums ... Got myself some private bloods done, got some T3 and within a week I was feeling better than I ever had in 25 years! If the Greek T3 thing didn't blow up in all our faces I would have probably lost another 0.5 stone by now!!

don't feel silly 1-1958 - I am in the same situation! have been on T3 for a few months now and DEFINITELY feeling better. Don't think my dose is optimal yet but getting there! i would add Reverse T3 and the ratio between RT3 and T3 to the list of blood tests above - that would help in knowing if you have a problem converting T4 to T3 - which is my problem. I was also tested for the MTHFR gene mutation which is closely associated with thyroid issues. I tested postive for one gene mutation. If you want to know more about this topic look up Dr Ben Casey - he is a great source of info on MTHFR. Take one step at a time - you will get there! Best wishes X

So I should ask the Doctor to run these test then? Just got private medical insure would be a good place to start I'd say.

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply to l-1958

It certainly would. You can but try. But so many doctors deny the importance of these tests, and refuse to do them.

What about iodine levels?

Are you asking me, or the OP?

Yes, I know. I asked the other person if she was talking to you or me, because she clicked on my reply button. You are the OP. :D

Since your testing list doesn't include iodine levels, I am asking you. Isn't iodine a major need for the thyroid to function?

I have had Hypothyroidism, for around 26 years now, it's so hard to keep my weight under control, I'm still working on it. First, I would, see my doctor, for lab's, a lot of times, doctors, think if your lab's are off, just a little, they don't need to change your meds, I had a doctor like that before, but it does matter. I hope you figure it out, good luck and God bless.

Thanks for your reply.I have never asked the Doctor for my labs before always trusted him.Think I'm going to have to ask him.At the moment he's got me taking 125 one and 150 the next day.

I-1958,

Ask your GP receptionist for a printout of your most recent thyroid results and ranges and post the results in a new question for advice.

I did slimming world for 6 months, exercised on my bike regularly and I lost 1 stone in all that time .. That said I was taking T3 for 3 of those months and only really lost it then. Since I have ran out of T3 I have put 7lb back on! Still eating healthy food, get on my bike etc. I would suggest getting yourself some T3 and your vits optimised, get on your bike and you may loose some ... Good luck.

Also it can be absolutely soul destroying when you go for your weigh in knowing you have worked so hard over the weeks and you loose 0.5lb one week, gain 2lb the next , loose 3 the next, gain 4 the next etc and there is a person there who looses 5lb a week (All due respect to them of course) that when asked how they did it they didn't work anywhere near as hard as you ... It can have an opposite affect as I'd come home sometimes in near on tears and say 'Stuff this! What's the point, drink 8 cans of Stella and buy a pizza! When I ran out of T3 I stopped going ...

Have a watch of this .. The drug he's taking about beginning with 'C' is only a brand name, Its Liothyronine Sodium or T3 ..

Helloh. Its very tricky how to loose weight when you have an under active gland...I have tried everything but surely, you can if you do exercise and don't eat carbohydrates. Concentrate on exercises even if its aqua or walking or running. The only thing is being consistence because the minute you stop , believe me you, you put it back. Mind what you eat and when...I had gone up to 100Kg but now, been 95-96 kg for quite a long time but still try hard to exercise 3-4 times a week.

Good luckx
