Subclinical hypo - ps

Thanks for all my responses. One thing I thought of today is that when I had my tsh of 7 ish I was taking 800mg of kelp a day. I don't always keep this up (I'm a bit sporadic) but had for at least a week before this test. Since getting the 25mg levothyroxine I stopped as not sure I should be taking it. Should I take it again so my blood test in 2 weeks will be comparable? Did that affect the test a couple of weeks ago?

I was weaning off the prozac I had been on for 2 years, but stopped decreasing dosage when got the levothyroxine too so could feel real results without interference.

(Perhaps unsurprisingly I was diagnosed with depression and put on 60mg prozac a day. Due to massive weight gain I had to see if this was the issue before subclinical diagnosis, even though felt crap went down to 40mg a day and been on that for a month now. Should have gone down to 20mg by now but didn't want to add another variable)

Just wanted to know people's thoughts on kelp and other medicines....

Thanks all.

Anything with iodine in it is a definite no-no for hypos.

Totally agree with steviecat. You're already getting iodine from your levo, so risk over-dosing, which will make things worse. It would only be 16.25 mcg you get from 25 mcg levo, but there's also what you get from your food. You only need a teaspoonful of iodine in your whole life, because it's recycled in the body. Kelp is very high in iodine, so really not a good idea.

Feelshitnfat,

Iodine used to be used to lower T4 and T3 in hyperthyroid patients. Taking high dose iodine may be why your TSH was 7. As the others said, hypothyroid patients should avoid iodine.

So I might not even have a Thyroid problem afterall?

Feelshitnfat,

At the very least TSH would probably be lower than 7 but TSH >2.5 indicates thyroid dysfunction even if NHS doesn't diagnose it until TSH is around 5 or higher.
