Three months later after full thyroid removel.haven't got my voice back

I had my entire thyroid tooken out three months ago.my voice hasent completely came back yet.I'm still extremely horsed,when I talk I have to push my voice out.no one can hear me if there not close by.Im not able to raise my voice are yell .if I try to push my voice to hard it hurts.does anyone know if this is normal Are something I need to worry about ?I don't have a thyroid specialist at this point just a regular doctor.

Yes that can happen after thyroid surgery. The nerves can get affected as they run nearby. It took 6 months for my voice to return to normal. If it persists then you can ask GP for a referral to get your vocal chords checked out. It's very frustrating you have my sympathy.

By three months with still a poor voice you should be referred to a speech and language therapist. They can properly assess how much movement there is of your vocal chords, normally by video fluoroscopy, and if appropriate give you exercises to strengthen muscles to optimise your voice. A good friend ended up with some permanent voice damage post TT but with speech and language advice and help was able to back to teaching, so please don't give up.

I had a friend who had the same problem. He was referred to a speech therapist and was given exercises and got his voice back. It took quite a while and it was a gradual process. I wouldn't try to force it if I were you.

I also had a total thyroidectomy, it took me 6 months approx to gain a full range back in my voice, at 3 months i was very hoarse and couldn't project it.My surgeon wasn't concerned unless at 6 months.it hadn't improved.

Hi,

I had my thyroid completely removed 16 years ago.I was the same,very hoarse and no strength in my voice.I had it checked and they said there was no damage to my vocal chords,but I'm sorry to tell you it has never completely recovered to what it was before the operation.I find I can't shout or talk very well in noisy backgrounds as I still don't have any strength in my voice,and can't sing very well either.

I'm sorry your having to go through this as well .thank you for your help .I'm going through all the same things .no strength in the voice .haven't been able to sing very well either.

I must have had a very good surgeon as there was no damage to vocal nerves at all. As with all thyroid issues, every person is different.

Why did you let someone remove your thyroid?

I had too . i did not have a choice.o.I had a goirter that grew so big it was blocking half of my air way. At the time they thought it was cancerous. They took out the entire thyroid for that reason.
