i am 20 yr old.. 3 months before i was diagnosed with thyroid (level 77) i am not having thyroid since childhood then how come such a high level has come ?? any reason ? from then i am taking medicine .is there a possibilty that iwould gain weight even after taking medicine and doing 30 min brisk walk everyday ?? is there any treatment( in homopethic or alopethic or ayurveda ) through which it be cured permanently ?? do i have eat medicines lifetime?? do i have take any precautions in eating ??

You don't say what is 77. It is probably TSH. As our thyroid hormone levels fall (T3 and T4) the pituitary puts out more TSH to stimulate the thyroid. If the thyroid is failing the TSH goes high. TSH is normally around 1.0 - 3.0 in healthy people. If you have more results please copy them here along with the reference intervals (they are numbers in brackets).

It's rare for a thyroid to recover, it usually fails gradually. Sometimes after having a baby the thyroid can go wrong and recover in six months or so. There is no alternative treatment that will fix it, you have to replace the missing hormone. This is usually done with levothyroxine which can have various brand names.

Once you are on the correct dose of levothyroxine you should stop gaining weight and lose some although it is difficult to get back to your original weight. Some patients say they feel better if they give up gluten foods but I don't think it matters to most patients. It's best to take your levothyroxine on an empty stomach and delay eating for about an hour. You can take it before breakfast or at bedtime. You should avoid coffee when taking your levothyroxine as it can reduce the amount you absorb. I think you might find it easier to take it at night as you don't have to worry about eating afterwards.

When was your last blood test and do you know the result? Your doctor should have checked you about a month after the first test to see how you are doing. How much levothyroxine have you been prescribed? As you are still not doing well make sure you tell your doctor. Make a list of any questions you have so you don't forget to ask them.

50 mg of levothyroxine is prescribed to me . is there any precautions in diet ?? can i drink tea ?

No problems with diet, just don't eat at the same time as you take the tablets. Tea is fine. You need to see your doctor and get your dose increased. 50 mcg is just to start you off, it's not enough.

If your dose is increased your TSH will come down, it's a question of getting the right dose and makes you feel well. This might mean a TSH in range 1.0 to 3.0 or something a bit lower. The TSH is a guide, doctors tend to rely on it too much and ignore the patinet's symptoms. Your TSH will not come down if your medication is not increased. Once you have a dose change it takes a week or two before you notice a difference and about six weeks for everything to settle.

No I'm not a doctor, just a patient. I asked whether you were in the UK because your first post looked like your first language may not be English. So I was trying to write in plain English. Then I noticed you are 20 and of course young people have a different writing style. So I wasn't sure if your first language is English and how much technical detail I should go into. Also there are different rules for doctors in different countries. Whichever country you are from you are very welcome here.

Thyronorm is the brand name for levothyroxine which is made in India. Your doctor should explain everything to you but many do not and even if they do we sometimes forget as hypothyroidism affects the memory until we are fully medicated.
