Turmeric is an iron-chelator, so need to be careful if iron is low, take 4 hours apart.
'Turmeric is an iron chelator...' I have just had blood test results back that show a high ferritin reading. Does this mean that, were I to take turmeric, this might reduce it?
It seems so. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...
But then it begs the question, should I be taking it as I struggle to keep my iron levels up?
Hi Zephyr bear,
After having a full iron panel, I am focusing on increasing my stored iron levels to its optimal level through dietary changes, supplements and, through my research, I have come across iron-chelators such as turmeric and so I am careful when I take it.
Its best for you to have a talk with your GP about protocols to lower your ferritin.
i have used tumeric for years, in almond milk at night, i add it to foods and smoothies but to be honest it hasnt made any difference to painful aching joints at all, it is more habit now but thanks Silver Fairy i didnt know it reacted with iron so i will watch that x
My husband who is very shortly about to undergo a total hip replacement has taken it for at least a year.. He swears it does him good, makes him more mobile and reduces his pain. He uses Future You brand and takes a 500mcg tablet every day. They have soy in them though.
When he went for his pre operation visit, the hospital had heard of it but it wasn't on their list of drugs that could be taken right up to the time of the anaesthetic. Can't remember when he is king to stop it but he will. It's a shame because I think it is one that has been proven to have a beneficial effect for that sort of thing.
Didn't know it interfered with iron. He had bloods taken and so far hasn't heard anything back from them. On the other hand from our experience with thyroid levels as long as he's anywhere 'within the range' I imagine it won't matter.
My latest test results show a reduction in CRP, from 11.70 to 5.5... very happy. CRP just kept climbing so figured turmeric was worth a try to reduce inflammation, been taking 500mg by VIP health from amazon. I stopped taking them a couple of weeks ago after finding out they're a blood thinner and I have taken gingko for over a year and had just bought a load. After this result I went back on turmeric and stopped gingko. My Ferritin is actually too high for the first time and have to reduce FERROUS FUMERATE.
