Alternative ways of managing Hashimotos

Hi everyone, I've been doing some research on how a lack of iodine can have a negative impact on your thyroid. Has anyone tried supplements? I've found this one which claims "The body uses the minerals Iodine and Selenium to make thyroid hormones, which are essential for heat, energy and metabolism. This formula provides Iodine and Selenium, plus Tyrosine and nine other vitamins and minerals" I have also read that too much iodine is bad for Hashimotos. I'm quite confused and don't want to approach GP. Anyone's thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks Lynsey

I typed Iodine and Hashimotos into the Search Facility here on the Forum and came up with over 900 posts that just may be relevant. See link above. Hopefully it will give you enough information to make your own decisions. If you are taking T4 - then the 4 indicates 4 atoms of iodine - so you will be getting some from your meds. I have read you only need a teaspoon in your entire life :-)

I think we all understand your confusion - it is a difficult subject to discuss and the decision to supplement or not - a very personal one.

Hi Marz, thanks for your response, I didn't think of doing that my common sense left me a long time ago. I do have lots of reading to do. I guess everyone is different, its the unknown that scares me. Thanks again

Before considering using iodine, do a urine test to see if you are deficient. Not the loading test where you take iodine beforehand. If you are deficient, it's recommended to supplement under the guidance of an experienced practioner.
