Sores in my nose.

Before my diagnosis of Graves I had months of sores in my nose. At first I thought they were cold sores but they didnt clear up as usual.

After I was medicated for the Graves they gradually went. I dont think they were due to being hyper (and Im certainly not now) but maybe a deficiency which I may have taken supps for or my metabolism slowing and being able to absorb what it needed from my diet.

I have them again!!

Any idea folks?

They could be due to a bacterial infection.

If your thyroid is not working properly so you cannot absorb vitamins and minerals your immune system stops working properly. This makes you more susceptible to bacteria, viruses and fungi. In the case of bacteria and fungi it can simply be the normal bacteria and fungi you have that just overgrows due to your body not being able to keep it in check.

The reason I don't think it is fungal is generally people have to use some sort of anti-fungal ointment/tablets to get fungal infections to go away once they start, there as bacterial infections can clear up on their own.

I have big problems with this, and it seems to be caused by constant nose running which happens in all weathers apart from very warm weather with no wind. My nose is basically staying chapped a lot of the time, and bleeding, inflammation and scabs are the result. And despite the nose running my nose feels painfully dry a lot of the time.

I had to get help for this quite recently, and was prescribed two things :

1) Mometasone 50mcg/dose nasal spray

2) Naseptin Nasal Cream :

They helped a lot.

I've also bought something which helps now I've stopped using the prescription stuff :

Neilmed Nasogel - I bought it from Boots. It isn't cheap but it is soothing.

My nose runs a lot too. I have TED so when my eyes are dry they run, then my nose runs. I look most attractive 🙄

I too have thoes horrid sores . Irritating painful and sore ! I've used saline washes up my nose with a nose irrigator it does help . I've tried Vaseline inside my nostrils too which helps the dryness. I fortunately mine hasn't gone away . I'm hypothyroid.

Go to the GP and get some antibiotic ointment. It's topical so just treats the particular area you rub it on not your entire system. If your GP asks why you think you have it and your thyroid treatment isn't optimal point that out.

Keep going back to the GP until it's gone as it can spread from your nose to your face to become impetigo or worse.

I also had some sort of blisters in my nose for most of last year and they suddenly went away. Now I think I have a leaky blood vessel making my nose sore and blocking the airway!

Hi Silverfairy,

I get sores too but I'm hypothyroid following having thyroid cancer removed 4 years ago. However, mine are at the very back of my nose and sinuses and keep bleeding. I too thought they were cold sores but I'm thinking that they're are something else because I've been having night time nose bleeds and I regularly wake up with a bloody test in my mouth and throat. My saliva tastes of salt all the time and I feel like I need to drink more to clear the taste. It's a pain and I'm getting fed up of it all now.

I don’t have any ideas about the sores. I wish I did! Weird thing is, for the past three months, I to, have had sores in my nose, painful ears, and a slight cough. I’m hypothyroid and my levels were quite low this last blood check. I was surprised because I didn’t have any signs my levels were off. Just the cough, scabby nose, and sore ears and very dry skin. Dry skin being the only sign. I was thinking, upping the meds would make a difference but two weeks in, I feel no different.

I, about six month ago lived in a very dry climat. Just moved to a humid climat, so the scabs baffle me. I have scabs in my nose more now, than I ever had living in a dry climate. It’s been a weird journey. Maybe it’s not thyroid at all but allergies. My nose isn’t running. Heck idk. I’m not one to go to the doctor much but I’m thinking it’s time. Good luck. I feel for you. It’s painful and annoying all at the same time. I’m to old to have my finger up my nose!
