Hi I have a severe vit d deficiency and endo had me on 20,000 a day for 2 weeks then 2000 a day for 2 months . He's also asked my gp to put it on repeat prescription.

2000 a day is not a very high dose. I have good levels and take that because I'd prefer excellent :p Over a year it raised me a handful of units.

Make sure you get retested in good time, and have the actual figures for both. It may be that you won't increase much at all, so will need a higher dose the next time round.

I have a retest in around 5 weeks my level was 18 . Do you think I need to take a higher dose ? I have bought my own vit d after joining the grouo on face book .

I don't know as much about it as. One members do. All I know is that 2000iu is a fairly low dose, suitable as a maintenance dose for someone who already has very good levels.

You will be able to find good advice for how to dose somewhere on the forum, as it comes up very often.

Or you could start your own thread with the new blood results when you get them. That's probably the best thing to do, as you'll get advice tailored to you and the amount of improvement you've had so far.

I started on 20,000 once a week for 12 weeks and brought my levels up to 80 I think it was then went on a maintenance dose bit when I passed this on to someone in another group I was shot down and told by the admins that I shouldn't be passing on wrong information but I replied that I was passing on what worked for me so that was the only info I had from my experience. Apparently it has a half life so after the intial boost it then decreases daily till the next amount. On hindsite that did happen! The day I took it was great but the next day I was back to square one but the second week I felt good for two days and so on so I presumed after 7 weeks the extra high doses I would be building up my levels. As I said it worked for me and I didn't mind the gradual increase by the day. Hopefully someone who split that dose over a week will give you knowledge of how that worked for them.

I did 20,000 a day for a week, then 20,000 a week for over a year and my levels still weren't good enough. Now I'm on 5,000 per day

It is something where the dose can be very variable but I think when you are up there, get that checked, then the maintenance dose needs to be daily and always retest after the winter and if good keep that dose or if not increase so you are prepared for the next winter period.

Scroll down in the above link where it suggests daily dosing in the FAQ's. I think I have read somewhere that it creates better levels - thought if was on the above website but couldn't find the article. Try also - vitamindcouncil.org

I have just been told I have low vitamin D after testing. On high dose once a week for six weeks then have to be retested. My result was 17 nmol/L so it is low. So just hoping for a better result when retested. Thought at first my thyroid was playing up, so Doctor asked for full blood test which was how I found out.

Here is a little mildly relevant story about vit D. I used to work outside as a landscape designer. One year I worked for 8 months (9 hour days) outside in shorts, T-shirt with no hat (my old one blew off the previous year and I didn't buy a new one). This was in the boiling hot California sun and I was aware that I was not being too smart. In October I was due for a blood test, my doc had ordered Vit D amongst others and guess what, it was below range!!! This blew my confidence in the testing equipment. How could I possibly be low?

Not what you're looking for?
