RAI is not to be recommended if any alternatives exist. In the case of a BENIGN toxic nodule that is merely making you hypERthyroid, then surgery is one possibility.

RAI WILL make you hypOthyroid with all the lifelong chronic problems that it brings with it. Without a working thyroid this would normally entail taking NDT to restore anything near normal health, which you doctor will REFUSE to give you as it is both an unlicensed medicine and is blacklisted for prescribing. Combined T3/T4 treatment is also currently in dispute and may possibly be banned.

Surgery to remove just a part of the thyroid will not leave you hypo as the remainder of the thyroid will still continue to work (theoretically, anyway). My partial throidectomy in 1989 left me with normal good health once the remainder started to operate again, which took 3-4 months. I was then able to enjoy normal health until a multinodular goitre developed in 2005 which made a jolly good effort to kill me and so left me thyroidless after surgery and RAI. I had feared that the small amount of thyroid tissue the surgeon was unable to remove for fear of doing me irreparable harm would once again attack me, which I very much did not want to happen, so opted for RAI. Perhaps those remnants could have given me a few more months of normal health, instead of which I was put onto levo monotherapy which kept me ill for the next 8 years until I gave up on the doctor ever making me well again and bought my own NDT from Thailand.
