A night after drinking with Hashimotos.

So last night I went over to a friends house with my boyfriend, and we bought some alcohol (champagne) to drink. But it seems like every time I drink even just a little bit my tongue swells up to a pretty good size. Kind of like a scalloped tongue or a tongue with water retention. I was wondering if anyone else with Hashimotos experiences this to. Or if it's just me?

Brieabailey There are a lot of us Hypos whose tolerance of alcohol is affected in one way or another. If it happens every time you have a drink, rethink your tipple! Maybe find a nice non-alcholic instead. It's not the end of the world and if your friends find it necessary to comment then remember that they don't have to live with the effects. You could become very popular with your friends as the designated driver on nights out :)

Yeah I don't really ever drink anymore. I did in High School. But I had bad anxiety because of it, and I knew my health was more important than being tipsy with some friends! But every once in awhile I let loose. Not a whole lot but I have a little champagne. I normally don't have a problem with it! But last night I tried a different kind of champagne, and didn't drink water in between drinks, so I imagine that's where it got me! I definitely believe I have an intolerance! I just wanted to know if anyone else's tongue swells a little when they drink alcohol with having and intolerance. (:

I must admit I've developed a total intolerance to alcohol and haven't had a drink about 3 years now. I do have a box of chocolate cherry liqueurs at Christmas but feel really sluggish and out of it for a couple of days. I don't know if its down to the Hashis or my pernicious anaemia but I think I have read somenwhere that a low b12 can also affect alcohol tolerance.

Yeah I only drink casually, and not often at all. Maybe like once every 6 months or so. But I know I also have low vitamin B-12, which makes my tongue swell a little anyways. But I think I know I have an intolerance. Which is why I don't drink very often. (: Champagne usually is fine for me though. But only a certain kind!

A swollen tongue can be an allergic reaction to sulphites; white wines tend to contain high levels:

My daughter, who doesn't have asthma, had an asthma attack after drinking a few glasses of white wine.

Prosecco - affects me in particular .

I've now gone tee total as any alcohol causes me to have swollen lips (like Botox !!)

Not worth the aggravation - but hubby pleased as I'm designated driver ALL the time now 🤔

Yep before my hashi diagnosis I had swelling every so often but on 100mg of levothyroxine my tongue is swelling a lot especially at night this week. I though this was down to wine but I haven't had a drink for 2 weeks!! It's starting to get more annoying now but I'll put up with it for the fact I'm not as forgetful/got more energy!
