Hoping for t3

susanyoungcasper1 profile image

Hi I am new and wanted to ask if anyone feels better taking t3 along with 125 levothyroxine.

I am hoping a specialist with prescribe the t3 for me but if not after years of struggling I will buy it private.

Welcome to the forum, Susanyoungcasper1.

If your TSH is low, FT4 high and FT3 low you will usually feel better with the addition of some Liothyronine (T3) added to Levothyroxine. T3 isn't a magic bullet though and doesn't suit everyone.

After nearly three years of trying to balance my meds I have had enough and my gp has referred me to specialist.

I feel okay on 150 mg levothyroxine but gp said it is reading I am over treated and drops it to 125 mg which then shows to low. This goes on every three months up and down and has left me exhausted, anxious and looking terrible. Hoping I will get some help

Susanyoungcasper1,

I suspect your GP is probably dosing according to the TSH level. Prescribing 125/150mcg alternate days could avoid over and under medicating.

Read Treatment Options in thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/about_... Email louise.roberts@thyroiduk.org.uk if you would like a copy of the Pulse article to show your GP.

His we have tried this as well and no change. I have gained nearly two stone and got no energy. Gone from exercising swimming and enjoying life to feeling low and miserable. I eat healthy and don't drink much alcohol (occasional wine at weekends )

susanyoungcasper1 You really need FT3 testing as well, to see how well you are converting. As Clutter has said, low TSH, high FT4 and low FT3 indicate poor conversion and the addition of T3 would help.

If your GP can't get FT3 tested then you can do a private fingerprick test at home with Blue Horizon or Medichecks.

While doing that, you might as well get vitamins and minerals tested at the same time as these need to be optimal for thyroid hormone to work properly. They both do a thyroid bundle which tests everything and is good value at £99, sometimes they have special offers.

It's important to test FT4 and FT3 at the same time to know how well you are converting.

What were your vitamin and mineral levels, and what doses of supplements are you taking?

With your D3, are you taking K2-MK7?

Don't hold your breath about getting FT3 tested, it's usually the lab who makes the decision whether it gets tested.

Will do thank you

Hi yes taking k2. It has to be the fact that the levothyroxine not sufficient to treat me as feel dreadful. A few people I know have had to tested and go won't prescribe so they bought off line and feel fabulous

As SeasideSusie mentioned you need to know the results of your vits and minerals. A multi -vit for instance will NOT give you enough B12. So you need really good levels of FERRITIN - FOLATE - B12 - VITD for the Levo to work in the body and for you to feel well. That also applies to using T3. Strong bodies need good foundations - just like a building .... ☺
