Hi, I usually take my levothyroxine at 7am. Today I've been prescribed Amoxicillin to take three times a day for an abscess under a root canal tooth. How long should I leave after my levo dose before I take this. Also could anyone advise a good pro biotic to also take?
I have to go back to have further root canal treatment/extraction in two weeks- any advice on what may be best please Thanks

SunsetLady Whenever I've had to take an antibiotic multiple times a day, I work out the timing of the antibiotics (it usually says space evenly) then find the time which is furthest away from any of them and take my Levo then. It might mean taking it at a completely different time than normal for the few days of the course of ABs but it won't hurt.
If you get up for the loo in the middle of the night that might be the best time, or bedtime, or early morning before you get up.
I currently take a maintenance antibiotic, one tablet three times a week. I currently take my Levo around 7am and take my AB afternoon or evening.
It's great that you're getting treatment for your tooth abscess. Since Amoxicillin can interact with levothyroxine, it’s generally advised to space them out by at least 4 hours. This will help ensure that the absorption of levothyroxine isn't affected by the antibiotic.
I recently had to take Amoxicillin for an infection, and it worked well for me in clearing it up without any major issues. As for probiotics, it’s a good idea to take them during your antibiotic course, as antibiotics can sometimes upset the balance of good bacteria in your gut. You might want to consider a probiotic with a variety of strains, like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, or a specific one like Saccharomyces boulardii that can support gut health during antibiotic use.
As for your upcoming root canal treatment or extraction, make sure to follow your dentist’s advice closely and maintain good oral hygiene to reduce any further risk of infection. If you're concerned, feel free to ask for recommendations on managing the process.
This post is over eight years old. While it is fine to reply to old posts, it often is not helpful to do so - however well-intended.
Having had a severe abscess some years ago, the first antibiotic was ineffective - but cannot now remember whether it was Amoxicillin or Ampicillin. I think I changed to Metronidazole.
