Hi everyone,

I was diagnosed with under active thyroid about two weeks ago.

I have now been diagnosed with a fatty liver.

I now have two problems to deal with.

Hopefully the tablets for the thyroid are working. I just have to

Cut down on my food.

Hi Susan. I also had deranged Liver Function blood test results in 2008 when Thyroid bloods revealed underactive Thyroid too.

Abnormal LFT result had also been mentioned by GP more that ten years before that.

Was your Hypothyroid diagnosis made from blood tests alone? Did you have an Ultrasound scan of your Thyroid? Did you see an Endocrinologist?

Do you know if antibodies were tested when bloods were done?

No one ever really explained why LFTs were so bad. I think 'fatty liver' was mentioned but what caused that? No one, it seemed, really knew. However when I had my Ultrasound scan of Abdomen nothing was found on the liver, just my numerous Gallstones.

The Liver blood results eventually improved.

In 2010 a rheumatologist noticed my 2008 results and retested. They came back Euthyroid ie within 'normal range' So the Rheumatologist said your Thyroid's OK and diagnosed Fibromyalgia !!!

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Autoimmune Thyroiditis & Hypothyroidism in 2011. I asked GP for Ultrasound scan of my Thyroid because I'd been advised to by a helpline.

I am assuming you have been started on either 25mcg or 50mcg Levothyroxine. When you are retested in about 4 to 6 weeks time your Levothyroxine dose might be increased. It does take a while to feel the benefits of the tablets.

And yes, I try to eat less and keep to a healthy balanced diet, not always accomplished though! Not easy!

Last time my full bloods were done my liver results came back OK.

If you can, get a copy of your blood test results with the ranges alonside.

Hope you will be feeling the benefit of the tablets soon.

Thinking of you.

Susan92,

For maximum absorption Levothyroxine should be taken with water 1 hour before, or 2 hours after, food and drink, 2 hours away from other medication and supplements, and 4 hours away from calcium, iron, vitamin D supplements, magnesium and oestrogen.

It takes 7-10 days for Levothyroxine to be absorbed before it starts working and it will take up to six weeks to feel the full impact of the dose. Symptoms may lag behind good biochemistry by several months.

You should have a follow up thyroid test 6-8 weeks after starting Levothyroxine. Arrange an early morning and fasting (water only) blood draw when TSH is highest, and take Levothyroxine after your blood draw.
