My problem with my thyroid meds.

Hi I am Lizzie. I'm 67 going on 21 (I wish) & among other things I suffer from Hypothyroidism. Does anyone know about side effects of taking too much Levothyroxine ? for a while I too was taking too much according to my doctor but I felt great When I was on 225 mcg's. Then after about a year on that amount my doctor said it was too much & knocked it down to 125 mcg, I could just barely get up in the mornings. My hair loss got worse & my mood was awful. I went back to my doctor & she raised my level to 175mcg. I can cope with that but I still don't feel as well as I did on 225mcg,

Can you post the thyroid results and ranges which made your GP suggest you were over medicated on 225mcg and your recent thyroid results and ranges on 125mcg?

I don't think your GP knows what she is doing. Dose reductionsadjustments are supposed to be made gradually and are usually in 25mcg increments. A dose reduction of 100mcg was excessive, and wrong, as it has subsequently been raised to 175mcg.

Hi Clutter. I can't tell you the results because I wasn't told what they were. Part of the problem was that she wanted to get my results 'optimal' as quickly as possible because I was due to go into hospital to have my gall bladder removed. That has now been cancelled ---permanently. I had several severe attacks of pain over five weeks last Easter. My doctor tried different antibiotics but eventually I ended up calling an ambulance. Oh & in the middle of all that I also had an Asthma attack. The upshot of that was not only did I have a infection in my gall bladder but I also had a severe blood infection & jaundice. I had an MRIct scan & there was a stone stuck in my bile duct. By the time the doctor operated there were two stones. So he enlarged the bottom end of the bile duct. They said that because of my age (68 in June) & other maladies, Asthma, Fibromyalgia Syndrome & Athritis, Thyroid. I was not a good candidate for a gall bladder removal. Subsequent to that, since I have not had another attack of pain. I have been discharged. From my first attack of gall bladder pain to now has taken six years. I hope it doesn't flare up again but I'm not holding my breath. Happy days NOT.

You need to ask for your results and ranges. If they were optimal at 225mcg in preparation for surgery I don't understand why dose has been reduced to 125mcg.

It's obvious that 225mcg was your optimum dose as you felt good.

They don't know what they're doing. In fact they are deciding on your dose due to the results on a piece of paper instead of listening to the patient who knows full well whether the dose is inadequate or optimum.

The aim of taking thyroid hormone replacements is to relieve patient of all clinical symptoms. That's how it was done before the introduction of the blood tests and levothyroxine. Nowadays it is all upon the TSH which is nonsense as it changes throughout the 24 hours of the day. It is not static.
