so, I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism 4 years ago. medicated with propranalol and carbimazole. after many trips to the gp over the past 6 months, with fatigue, confusion, brain fog, trouble swollowing... the list is endless..and many times of being told I was depressed and have anxiety 'issues'. I decided it was time to do my own research (long overdue) I went to my GP... again... and told him in not so many words, that he was wrong. it was obvious I had been doing my research, although not massive amounts, but enough for him to accept that he was fobbing me off! he had the cheek to turn around and say " well now you are taking this seriously, what would you like me to do".... Honestly how serious does one take an illmess that isn't explained to you! 😡... I thought I could trust my GP, how wrong was i!.
so, he tested my TSH and T4 again 😕... my TSH is at 10 and my T4 is at 8.8 which has now been confirmed as being HYPO. I am waiting for my endo appointment and a scan on my throat. but until then, my GP rang me and has said to stop taking my Propranalol and to reduce my carbimazole from 2 x 5mg tablets twice a day
to 1 x 5mg tablets twice a day.
my question is, do you treat HYPOTHYROIDISM with CARBIMAZOLE???.
sorry for the long post and thank you for reading through x

Hi what was your original diagnosis, have you had antibodies tested for graves desease as this is one of the things that can cause hyperthyroidism, and carbimazole and propanadol are what they use to treat that. They have left you on a too high dose of carbimazole and that's why you have gone hypo, have you seen an endo? As this really should be treated by specialist, if you haven't ask gp to refer you.
Oops just reread your post and see you are waiting to see endo
thank you for your reply. I have not been given any other diagnosis other than being overactive, now underactive.
I also have an appointment with an eye specialist as my eyes are yellow. is there anything that could be suggested to ease any of these symptoms. my endo appointment is 8 weeks away!! thank you.
however after falling pregnant I was taken off them. after miscarrying I took them, then generally forgot to take them and didn't continue to take them, but I continued to have my blood tests which all came back 'normal'. it's only been since around Christmas time that my vision decreased dramatically over a short period of time that I have been taking them regular again. and Monday was the first 'diagnosis' of being hypo.
Unfortunately there is no easy fix with thyroid now your carbimazole has been reduced you should start to feel better in 2 to 4 weeks, the endo will probably want to do another bloodtest when you go to your appointment to see if they need to change dose again. Are you having double vision/ blurred vision this could be due to wrong dose of meds or could be thyroid eye desease the eye specialist will be able to diagnose this, if eyes are sore you could try some eye drops for dry eyes they have given me some relief from the gritty/ stinging sensation I also am waiting to see eye specialist. I've not heard of yellow eyes before but there are side effects when taking carbimazole and that is listed as one of them if you look at the leaflet that comes with the tabs under possible side effects, if you haven't got a leaflet you can look it up on line at medicines.org.uk, if I were you I would see gp about this as could be serious though maybe not the one you've been seeing as he sounds useless. Let us know how things go
