Dervla123 It's hard to recommend one as there are different probiotics for different things. You need to find out what the different ones are useful for and see if it's suitable for you. Multistrain ones are generally recommended, and Acidophilus is highly recommended to be included. A couple of sites I bookmarked a while ago might help

And a couple of days ago this link was posted by (I think) either Greygoose or Marz

I've used Bio-kult Advanced (14 strain) in the past but it does say it may contain soya. Currently using Now Probiotic 10 25 billion, I like this one because it doesn't contain too many non essential ingredients nor magnesium stearate like some do.
Hi Dervla123, I have been using kefir milk, which I buy from the Polish section of a large supermarket. I find the taste very tangy but I blitz a measure with fruit and it then tastes good. It is also quite cheap and possibly more effective compared to the named brands.
You also need prebiotics to ensure that the gut bacteria trend towards the good ones and out compete the bad ones. Beans, oats, and potatoes in the diet are good sources of prebiotic fibre. There's much more.
If you are drinking kefir, that's fine but studies done in Japan showed that the bacteria and yeasts from the kefir do not stay in the digestive tract. Kefir and other fermented foods have their place but to maintain a good human microbiome you have to feed it with prebiotic fibres present in foods consumed on a regular basis.
Biokult 14 strain and mutaflor. You get Mutaflor through Breakspears Medical. I am on both (2x twice a day biokult) 2x am Mutaflor, recommended by a London functional doctor.
I find VSL #3 probiotic to be effective.
As an aside: Wow! Another Dervla. The only person I know of with this name is Dervla Murphy, the Irish writer who travelled all sorts of (crazy) exotic places. I've read almost all of her books. She's 85 years old now and I know she is not 'on line'. Still uses a typewriter. She's one tough old bird. Nice to know that Guinness and other imbibatory liquids have not slowed her down. LOL!
Love the name. 'Daughter of Ireland'.
