What brand of probiotic do you use?

puncturedbicycle profile image

I think both my partner and I should be using a probiotic, but what brand? Any suggestions? I gather Jarrow is a respected brand of supplement though I haven't looked into it yet. Thoughts?

puncturedbicycle There are lots of different strains of probiotics and they do different 'jobs'. I've had Bio-kult Advanced Multi Strain (14 strains) before and am currently using Cytoplan Acidophilus Plus (9 strains).

It's worth reading a bit about what the different strains do:

Thanks for that. Yes, I've read that second article. I have a touch of research-itis, which is to say I can research anything beyond my ability to make a decision and a purchase, so very keen to get on and get a bottle in a shopping basket. Will have a look at the brands you've mentioned. Very helpful, thanks again. :-)

reason I ask is that I did some research on probiotics before deciding which one to have because there are so many. Apparently some can actually affect antibody levels going up and cause inflammation. The particular strains I had to look for was Bifidobacterium lactis HN019 and Lactobacillus rhamnosus HN001 which reportedly don't affect the antibodies. metagenics.com/mp/products/....

It's not cheap and I only found one company here that sells american stuff. Just finished my second bottle

I suffer the same problem. The best advice I read was don't sweat over your choice of probiotic - move around them - try different ones. Your body will show whether it likes them or whether they do nothing.

Hi,

Kefir is easy to make, & is also high in B12.

Sadly I can't bear the thought of it. But good to know if I come around to the idea. :-)

There's also water kefir, & kombucha, if you dislike dairy.

Kefir is good and probably cheaper. I used sauerkraut.

I like vsl3. It's quite pricey but I always feel so much better when I take it.

I would only recommend probiotic supplements for a short period whilst making kefir and /or sauerkraut to make sure that you are spending your money on food and not too many supplements. There are plenty of suggestions out there re pre- and probiotic foods. Having stuck with kefir from milk alternatives for a year I am really noticing the differences. I am now experimenting with water kefir , which has all the same benefits, and finding it even easier than the milk version.

I like dairy kefir as it has a lot of B12 & K2. :)

I like the PB 8 brand of probiotic. I also supplement with

amazon.co.uk/Nutricology-Al...

saccharomyces boulardii is a 'tough as boot leather' probiotic that colonizes the gut and it is very hard to kill off. It may appear to be more or too expensive but you don't have to take it every day. I take one cap a few times x week or as needed. The PB 8 is a very good 'every day' probiotic.

SBO type probiotics are very, very expensive in my opinion but they are very good. (SBO = soil based organisms)

Thanks for that. I was wondering what the difference was between the usual probiotics and the soil based type.

There is a great interpretation of this in Tim Spectres Book, The Diet Myth.... just to add to your research-itis. :P
