Hi hellsbells29 if you've been diagnosed as hypothyroid by your GP and those results certainly suggest you do have an under active thyroid gland then your GP will prescribe levothyroxine. This is a synthetic form of the hormone that your body will use to replace the thyroxine that your thyroid gland isn't producing enough of. You will probably be started on around 50 mcg per day to start with. It will take a couple of weeks for you to start noticing any difference. The medication won't directly help you lose weight per se but will ensure your body doesn't put more weight on and jeopardise your weight loss efforts. So it should help your slimming world and will help you start to feel a bit better soon.
Hope this helps. This is a great forum with lots of knowledgeable contributors so any questions then just ask!
Also a good habit to get into is to ask your GP for a copy of any blood tests you have done and get the reference ranges. Then if you have questions you can post results and reference ranges on here for people to help you. Normally a GP would initially test for TSH thyroid stimulating hormone and FT4 free thyroxine.
Good luck with the slimming world. I'm on it again at the moment. It works!
TSH 8.28 means you have primary hypothyroidism ie your thyroid gland is failing. I would need to see your T4 lab ref range (figures in brackets after the result) to see whether T4 10.6 is below range.
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) is a pituitary hormone which responds to thyroid hormone (T4 and T3) levels. When T4 and T3 are low TSH is high and when sufficient T4 and T3 is detected TSH will be low.
